Three guns going hunting
« on: September 14, 2011, 03:43:51 AM »
A buddy and I were supposed to leave today, but the weather has us backed up a couple of days.  We're going an hour and a half east to Munuscong State Forest (Eastern Upper Peninsula, Michigan) for turkey, small game, and fishing.  We're taking my pop-up camper and canoe and staying in the State campground there.  The guns going are my Handi 32-20 and Pardner .410, 3 inch, 22 inch full choke for small game, and for turkey, in memory of my dad, my 12 ga. J.C. Higgins pump he gave me 54 years ago.  This'll be the first time in about 10 years I've hunted off my own land.

The Munuscong is a very special place with widely diverse habitat....upland hard and soft woods, rivers, fields, marsh and open lake.  It's got miles of wonderful edges to hunt, and lots of turkeys.  Evenings will find us sitting by the campfire and drowning worms for cats.  How long are we going to stay.....who knows or cares.  There's a grocery store a few miles away.

Lonnie's dog "Dawg" is the camp dog...she's gun shy and doesn't hunt.  My Charlie Feist, "Charlie" is going for small game.  It's gonna be cold, perhaps we should take more dogs ;D

I couldn't handle your "cooled off" temp.  Cool for us is a little above zero.

Pete- Just be careful, I hunt State land a lot and it can be kind of scary sometimes, so keep some orange handy even if it isn't the law so you are seen in the low light- walking in or back to the car.
Good luck and I hope the Higgins scores you a bird for the memories. Well and the H&Rs but the Higgins for sure.  Have fun, take some pics if you get a chance.  thejanitor

Good luck Pete, I love that you're taking the J.C. Higgins. History is a big part of what makes hunting cool to me. I didn't grow up in a hunting family so I love to hear other people's stories about guns handed down. My hunting buddy uses a '94 in 32 Special (built in 1906) that was left in the will of an old gentleman that taught my friend how to hunt.

Get a Tom for your dad.
I'm sure he would be happy seeing you use that Higgins.  Best of luck.

Pete,  Hope you have great luck, but if you don't.....make something up!!  ::)

That's awful advice from a pastor, huh!?  But heck, we're talking huntin' here and tall tales are part of it.   ;D   Jeepman already said it for us here in Texas.  It's been hotter'n a $3 pistol here all summer.  In the DFW area, we set a new record (since weather recording began in late 1800's)  This summer had 70 days of 100+ temperatures.....not all consecutive but still that's over 2 full months over 100!!!  Greely may have been onto something.    8)   Think I'll stay though.   ;D

Fr.  Didn't Greely say "Go west young man."  I think he meant go west....not north.  Just to make you jealous, my A/C added a whole eight bucks to my electric bill in August.  I don't think it ever bumped here 90 all summer.  We start sweating at about 60 ;D

I'm just finishing double checking that we've got everything we need for the trip.  There's always that "You know what we forgot??"  I buddy of mine went deer hunting and had to go home to get his rifle.  He'd set it out and his wife put it out of the way behind a door.
