Back to the Viet Nam part of it, it's a symptom of an aging population of Viet Nam Veterans. The same kind of thing started happening in a big way starting about 1985 to the WWII vets. They were becoming politically irrelevant, despite all their accomplishments, like building a prosperous post-war economy. There were a lot of people picking on them, basically accusing them has being old has-beens and a burden on society.
Get ready for the same treatment if you're a Viet Nam Vet, except in your case there won't be a Tom Brokaw or Ken Burns to give people the perception that you were a member of a great generation. (Actually, I'd be surprised if Burns isn't working on a documentary, but it won't be as flattering as the WWII documentary he did.)
It's despicable, but that's the way I see it. I still love you, though. Thanks!
