Just can't make up my mind... <link added>
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:11:19 AM »
I really thought a Handi would be handy, but it just isn't turning out to be my cup of tea so to speak.  I'm contemplating ridding myself of it and getting a turnbolt.  I'm even considering getting rid of my Contender handgun.  Single shots are fun and a challenge in their own right, but even after a few trips to the range, I keep reaching for the non-existant bolt ::). (not with the handgun though ofcourse)  So my dilema is do I wait to see if I can get a deer with it this year and then possibly want to keep it, or send it to a home it will be appreciated at now-freeing up some $ to get what I know I will be comfortable with?  I'm pretty sure that I'll stick with a .243 as I like the ballistics and mild recoil.  The single shot part isn't what gets me, but being able to "sling up" with this type of action/stock set up doesn't seem conducive to best accuracy.  Maybe I'm wrong and just being resistant to change.  Anybody else suffer the same sentiments when you started getting into Handis?

Nope, I'm keeping mine.  I have a bunch of bolt guns and 2 Handi rifles.  I like them all for what they do best...

For three years in a row I've killed multiple deer on the same day with a single shot....just sayin......Three within 2 minutes one year, and the other years were two each within a few seconds of each other.

I can load and fire as fast as I can a bolt.

Yes, except instead of moving away from handis toward bolt guns, I moved toward Ruger No 1's. (I actually sold my one bolt gun, too).
I am handi-less right now, but I still enjoy reading about them, and I still stop and look at them in the guns shops. Not saying I wouldn't end up with another one.  Just right now I want to enjoy my Rugers.
Nice thing is that you can always sell what you don't want, and get what you want. There is no "loss of value", only the "cost of entertainment".

Edit: the guy that bought my original handi to will let me borrow it anytime, so I kind of have visitation rights.

Maybe it will just be a truck gun that a box of shells stays with for impromptu hunts on the ride home from work or taken out for crop damage deer tags over the summer months.  It shoots well enough for large game to about 250, but minute of groundhog at that distance is not doable without reloading.  As such, it won't work for my intended purpose, a long range vermin killer with double duty as a deer rifle.  I'd rather have a platform I am more comfortable with that is minute of groundhog capable out to 600 yards. To me a .243 at a groundhog 100 yards away is wasted $ when a cheaper round can do the same thing (WMR could even do that).  I am a big advocate for one shot does the trick, so its not that aspect that is bugging me.  Oh well, I'll make up my mind eventually....

Those #1's are nice. I'd like to shoot one sometime but I'm not sure I'd ever own one that didn't have some collector value as an investment.

Unless I find a 'steal' on a No.1, I can have 2 or maybe 3 H&Rs, or 1/2 to 1/3 in the rifle and spend the rest on ammo. Not that I dont lust after a No.1, I surely do, but I have also read that not all of them are spot on accurate out of the box either.
Regarding your bolt gun preference, yeah, some actions just better suit one guy over another. No foul, go with what you are most comfortable with and have fun!  ;D

If I wanted accuracy only I would get a Savage Palma in 6.5. If I wanted power I would get a 416 Rigby in a Ruger. I used to think of handi's as cheap guns that were just for people who could not afford better. I am now knee deep into handi's and love them. I am collecting the set in rimmed cartridges and wished they made more. I can make all my bullets for any of them, they are cheap and easy to load for, and if (when)I  drop or scratch one I dont get chest pains. They remind me of Al Frankens Smally character- they are accurate enough, they are powerful enough, they are pretty enough, and dog gone it, people like 'em. Meanwhile I will wait patiently until they make one in a 25/35.....or /20. Everyone on the planet has some black rifle with a gazillion round mag in 5.56. I say 45/70........the original assault rifle.

I think the nice thing about this sport/hobby is that you can define and pursue your own idea of success;  own a lot of different rifles, shoot a lot, own the most accurate rifle, create a rifle/load in a unique caliber, turn something average in to something wonderful, own something from an age gone by...all valid goals in this sport.
We all have our own definition of success, and fortunatley, on this forum we all seem to enjoy each other's success.

I can say that I have two bolt guns that consitantly shoot better than my handis. That being said I wouldnt give up the handis I have. Yes they have been work to get to shoot as well as they do. but to me what fun is it to pull a gun out of the box it shoots great and you take it out once in a while to shoot a couple rounds. I quess I like the tinkering and at the price when you get them where you want them it is rewarding. Go with what you like there is no rite or wrong enjoy them all.

I've never thought of them as a cheap man's gun. Like you said Manatee, they are ... enough for those that use them for their intended purpose.  Just like a LR is enough for tree rats yet some use the HMR.  I also like trying different aspects of shooting, but the single shot break action rifle isn't where I feel comfortable.  I grew up using autos and bolts, though I have owned levers, and prefer them.  I am not an AR afficianado and sold the two I had after I went through that phase.  I want what I want...a comfortable for me tool to harvest animals out to the edge of my comfort zone where power is sufficient to do so.  I would love for this Handi to be a .5 MOA shooter with factory ammo, but I just don't see it happening.  I punch paper with rimfires, I hunt with them and everything else. I don't need a .06 ctc group at 100 yards for my .243, but I love seeing it on those very rare perfect days at 25 yards with my LR (most are either side of .3" with my hunting ammo).  I could live with up to 1 MOA groups for my wants.  Needs are a different matter... many a family was kept fed with just a shotgun with field and slug barrels.

Guess I'm odd.  Selling two bolt guns and a lever .35.  Keeping the Handi's.

Maybe getting old.

The Ruger's nice, but I'd be afraid of modding something cost me that much.  A Handi I can shorten, tighten, bob the hammer and hack up the stock with less concern.  I like to tinker with everything I got, and get things just to play with them.  I can also say I spent more on the scope than on the rifle without lying.

Nope, I like single shot guns.
I've been shooting traditional ML guns for over 20yrs by choice, moving to a Handi was easy.
How can ya miss with these suppository guns?
It's a silly notion, thinking you need another shot.

But if ya don't like'm by all means pass it over to home it'll feel welcome at and move on to something else,
 It's all good,  :)

I have a bunch of Handi's and I enjoy shooting and messing with them, but I also have an addiction to lightweight bolt guns that I prefer for 'serious' deer hunting.

I have bolts, and Handis, I prefer the Handis, but I can sure see what you mean about trying to tighten the sling in a military type shooting method (sorry don't know the name) to increase stability and have it actually throw the shot off due to harmonics in the forend..... But I don't hold like that so it has never been an issue in a hunting situation. But most all my hunting party wonders why I keep carrying a single shot every year, and also wonders how I can afford all the different calibers... ;)
Hope you find the bolt your comfortable with and fill the freezer. Take care,  thejanitor

I only have one handy.  And a few years ago took it out and we had multiple targets set out on the range.  My buddy had a 7 shot bolt rifle and I had my 22 Mag.  All said and done with him using 4 mags I was able to load faster over time.  I see the single shot as a challange.
But when big game hunting I do have a single shot (am I allowed to say No 3 here ) but other than that I reach for a bolt rifle every time.  I think your choice of 243 would be good for most hunting.

I used a lever (336 in 30-30) for years, then I decided to switch over to a single shot (Ruger #1 in 7x57) for a season, thought about switching over to a semi-auto (Rem 742 in 30-06) never did, switched over to a bolt (Rem 700 in 7x57), been using the bolt for years and happy with it, but I plan on using a Handi this year in 45-70.
What's that saying? "Try it you might like it", if not you can always go back to the bolt.  If your short of cash, and need to sell the Handi's to get your bolt, I say do it.

One thing that hasn't really been brought up, is that there is only a 30 day right of recension with a Handi, and 0 days if you own 2 or more.  Failure to comply will force Tim to send the Handi police and haul you away...... :-[   Whatever you do, don't hire Atlaw to represent you....he's kinda' a Handi man as well and might be unduly prejudiced.

Seriously, get what you want and enjoy it.  I still got a couple of bolt guns tucked away in the back of the safe.  That will leave more Handi's for me.....

I'd always liked and wanted to play with the break actions and various single shot platforms.  Thompson, was too pricey in my opinion and after shooting a few, really didn't like the fit.  I'd been kicking myself in the keyster for about 10 years for not buying a couple Savage 24's as I almost did several times and now they are thin as a shirt made of spiderweb and quite expensive.  I ran into a BC .45-70 by accident as I didn't know H&R made such a critter.  I'd been watching racks and hunting for deals on a replica Sharps, because the one thing I did know what I wanted was .45-70 gov.  Once I picked up the buffalo classic though, I was pretty much sold.  I went home pulled out the piggy bank and had it the next morning.  Temperature was a chilly 5 degrees not including windchill, so I only shot it at 25 yards for the first few, but managed several clover leaf groups.  THEN I saw the 45LC Classic Carbine and knew my Blackhawk .45 Colt needed a friend. ;)  Needless to say I love the ones I have.  I also like my Bolt guns and lever guns.  Each has a place, but when hunting, I usually grab one of the Handi's and my Blackhawk...  ;)  Definitely no reason not to have many.  Some day I will get braver on modifications, but mine are still basically stock.  hehe

redleg, you mention a couple of times wanting a rifle you are comfortable with. So it seems pretty clear to me you go with that. Who cares if it is a single shot, bolt, lever, semi... it's your rifle and your comfort.

Many of us here wandered into the the Handi world more-or-less by accident, and found it a comfortable place so we stayed. Doesn't mean we don't like being in other places. I have five Handis, three lever guns, three semi autos, one bolt gun, and three revolvers, and looking for a pump shotgun and another semi auto for a carry gun.

I'm comfortable with 'em all. Just that some years ago I went single shot for most of my shootin' activities, and I don't regret it.

As for your question... it's a nope for me. I never saw it as an either-or single shots versus anything else anyway. When I bought my first single shot (a Topper 158 20ga/3030 combo) in 1980-ish my primary hunting rifle was a bolt action .308 Sako, and a Marlin 336 in 30/30 for the brush country.

I originally bought it because it was cheap, and I wanted a 20 ga for grouse hunting. But when I put the 30/30 barrel on and tried it just for fun, I saw how accurate I was with it. I started packing the Topper instead of the Marlin 'cause I was not only more accurate with it, but it was lighter, and handy to carry.  ;)

A short time later I picked up a .308 Ruger #1, and I started packing that over the Sako. Easier to carry, and just as accurate... etc. etc.
