polish chamber - shocked to what i found
« on: September 14, 2011, 03:17:44 PM »
hello;

followed advice on "how to polish" my handi's chamber.  shocked what found.

used a spent case, fired in my rifle, coated with j. b. bore paste, and spun with a drill.

 looked into chamber and discovered 14 "flutes" running from back to front of chamber.  7 bright and 7 dull "flutes".  anyone got an idea on what i'm seeing????  how they cut the rifles chamber?

thanks for any input.

The chamber in my new 45/410 looks like that too. It doesn't leave any marks on the brass when it's fired but it don't look good. I'm gonna spend some time polishing it.

If you 'polish' it all out you will enlarge the chamber and overwork the brass each time you resize and shoot. Might be best to polish just enough to get smooth extraction/ejection and call it good.

Ah, you have the NEF/H&R version of the infamous HK G3/91 fluted chamber ::) !  Not much use except in a selective-fire roller-block action - LOL.  How does it function - ejector/extractor?  I agree with gcrank1, don't try to polish it all out.

It's only defective if it doesn't eject the case, or the case sticks.   Other than that it's just cosmetic, and over polishing as someone mentioned is only going to do more harm than good.

Is the fired brass showing a fluted pattern? The Hk fluted chamber wreck's the brass . If no pattern shows on fired case it is not a problem. 26-t

I wouldn't worry about it if it shoots good and ejects/extracts fine, ever see a jeweled bolt? Consider it a custom finished chamber!  ;D If it doesn't work right, return it to H&R, they'll fix it.

FWIW, I have a 44mag that I rechambered to 444 Marlin, it has some strange markings in the first 6-8" of the bore ahead of the chamber, it shoots excellent just like all my Handis.  ;)
