Ever hunted with Terriers?

Has anyone here ever hunted anything with a terrier?  If so, what kind of terrier?  What was the quarry?  How did the terrier do?

Yes. I hunted with Jack Russells and Silky Terriors. Both were very aggressive, game dogs. They would not "tree", but would go to ground and fight anything on 4 feet. Both breeds were great pets as well. Although you see a lot of Jacks Russells on television, they are not a lap dog. They are  very aggressive, territorial, dogs. They are likely to kill your cat if you have one.

I have never personally hunted with one, but was planning on starting with mine before she went missing last year.   She was a Jack Russel. Very smart too. She listened well even with very little training. She would run the heck out of rabbits around my house. Didnt really care much for anything else, but rabbits seemed to always be on her mind.

I have hunted with jack russells, jagds, and patterdale terriers for the last 16 years. Mainly hunt coon, but have also caught red and grey fox, woodchuck, rockchuck, possum, , rabbit, pheasant, and squirrel. Still trying to get a badger and bobcat, but they're not something we see or get a chance to hunt often. They do a fine job and handle themselves good. Most people will blow smoke about how " B.A." and aggressive their dogs are or were, but there are major differences in game. A northern jumbo coon is NOT the same as a fully grown adult further south. Lots of guys will also talk about their dogs killing all or most of the game they take...take it from somebody who's seen hundreds of terriers of different breeds hunt in different states and in my area from other states, most are just wishful thinkers.Lol

What is the best breed for all-around hunting?  What is the difference between the breeds?  What do you prefer and why?

That's kinda like asking whats the best gun... What do you mean all around hunting? Coon to deer to moose and geese? Where do you live and how do you plan on hunting them? They are bred for hunting in holes and dens but can be used in a variety of situations. The difference between them ranges from size to style to personality. They ain't for everybody and can be a handful. It would be much easier question to answer knowing what kind of critter you are after and how you want to hunt them....

I prefer patterdales and hunt abandoned farms, houses, woodpiles, ground holes, cattail sloughs, round bale stacks, and anywhere I can find coons. The patterdales suit the way I hunt and I do have several patterdale pitbull crosses as well. If you are thinking of getting into hunting with terriers do yourself a huge favor and hunt with people near you and with dogs of several breeds or lines before you buy anything. It will serve you well.
