I tried some RD 265 gr....
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:23:41 PM »
I loaded up some Ranch Dog 265 gr. bullets that were sent to me. I put a gas check on them and  dipped them in LLA,  and loaded them with a book load of Lil' gun, and the darn things keyholed at 50 yards, when they hit the target. I suppose I'll try another loading to see if I can make them do a bit better. My standard load did fine, good groups and nice round holes, but the other wasn't what I expected...

What was the 'book load' that you used? That bullet has performed great for me in revolver and rifle.

My RD 265 mold drops boolits at .432" and if I size/gascheck them in my Lee .430" die, they are not acurate in my Puma (with a .432" bore). I use a .432" Lee die I got from Ranchdog and then the sized/checked boolits work quite well. What are you shooting them in, and did you measure groove and throat diameters?

I used 19 grains of Lil'Gun and was shooting them in my SRH.
I sized them to .430, as I do my Lee and RCBS bullets, and with those I have no problems

Tom I would sugg. that you slug your gun. Even if one bullet shoots well doesn't mean that all will. Each chamber in the cylinder as well as the bore.
The throats of the cylinders should be .001 to .002 over barrel dia.

It is a fantastic bullet but I have a few comments.
Switch to a soft lube like LBT Soft Blue. Dump the Alox!
I use 22 gr of 296 and a Fed 150 primer in my SBH. It will do 1-1/4" at 100 yards using a red dot and a rest.
Lil'gun burns extremely hot and can damage a revolver.
I use .432" from my SBH with .4324" throats and a .430" groove.
Also I will not use 4227 in the .44 either As the gun warms, pressures and velocity will continue to climb and the hotter the gun the worse it will get.
