I like, If I ever wear out the 4" model I have owned for years I'll half to upgrade to this new one.  :)  The only things I've done to mine is orange nail polish on the front sight and elk stag grip inserts for the handles, along with a nice Tom 3persons holster it makes a nice woods bumming gun.  ;)

I've been thinking about a new .22 revolver, and I think I just learned what I want!  This new Ruger looks like it would be a lot of fun to shoot.  Yesterday I shot my .357 magnum SP 101 with the 2+" barrel and hit an 18" gong target five out of five from about 35 yards.  I was shooting 158 grain Magtech semiwadcutters over 6.4 grains of Unique.

YIKES!!
Ya, I didn't look for the price. 675.00 is msrp from Ruger. But even if you knocked 100.00 off of it, you could still get a nice used S&W M-63 with some collector value to it for that price.

I'm too cheap for that and I'm very happy with my 20yr old Taurus M-94......200 bucks from a pawn shop.

they look like a quality gun.time will tell.but as other posters say, i might have to shop around for a older smith at that price. new guns dont really turn me on.id rather have a piece of history for the same price.

I've got an older SP101 that is a six shot.  Got a good deal on it.  Traded a Walther P-22 + $75.  It is built like a tank.  Only thing is I would like the barrel shortened to 3".

Okay, yeah, wootz, yaza!

So Thursday @ lunchtime I had my dealer call his salesman @ Davidsons. Told him to ship one as soon as it was available.

I went to the my LGS yesterday @ lunchtime,an it was here already!

The front sight frame is steel and dovetailed in, so I imagine replacement all-black blades (patridge & ramped) will be on the market soon.

Trigger has zero creep. Single action pull 4-1/4 lb, double action 14 lb.

I love my LGS. $539.00 + Tax

I think I'm going to be very happy with mine! I probably ordered mine around the same time as ultramag44. Took a couple of extra days to get here cause of the distance from distributer, but its all ready to go, now need more time in the day to get to the range.  I've been interested in a old model Smith 63 for some time also but couldn't find one local.  And looking at the online and auction prices on a M63 along with shipping and transfer you'll be looking at the same price range as the new SP 101.  I like my other rugers so I'm pretty dang sure I'm gona like this one too!

I bought 3 of them a few weeks ago, 1 for me, one for the wife and one for my son. They are great little guns, not as accurate as my S&W 63, but they are getting more accurate after a few hundred rounds. I wanted one just for packing while running my coyote traps to dispatch the little critters.

I am debating between this and the new single 10 as my next toy...  hard decision
My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

DM, Don't know about that, but I know my old 6 shot model has worked flawlessly for years. I've also got 2 in 32 mag and they shoot in really nice. But I haven't heard about problems with the 8 shot models.  :o

I have actually been thinking about a new 8shot for me & then rechambering my 6shot to 22mag.  ;D Good to know about the problems though so I can give ruger time to work out the issues.

Why couldn't Ruger have put a fully adjustable sight on the centerfire models? Its absence is a major downgrade on the older models. Wish I could find someone to put a 'real' sight on mine.

I have seen S&W sights attached to just about everything. Gunsmiths are putting adjustable sights on Ruger Bearcats and all sorts of guns now. Just find a gunsmith that can do the milling needed to install the rear sight and mill off the front sight. Then replace the front one with a enterchangable sight system. You will have to have a taller front sight. Sorry I can't give you any names.

You can look at what Hamilton Bowen is doing with SP 101s and J frames. They are not adjustable, but regulated by Bowen when installed.
From gunblast.com;
"This rear sight is much easier to see clearly, and the pinned front sight is very easy to pick up.  The sight picture offered by this setup is precise, and the sights are as rugged and durable as any. Bowen regulates the sights in his shop to match the shooter’s chosen ammunition, but in recognition of the fact that guns can shoot to different points of aim for different shooters, both front and rear sights are interchangeable. Bowen offers five different rear sight offsets - one centered and two each left and right, allowing 1-2" windage corrections at 25 yards."
http://www.gunblast.com/Bowen-SP101.htm

Or, save some cash and trade in on a S&W M-60. I have one, and it's like pulling fishhooks out of my pocket with that adjustable rear sight on there. It's strickly a holster gun because of that, for me. The Bowen option looks alot more slippery to me.

Yes Alan does good work on the rugers. He reworked one of my sp101s into a slicked up 327 federal.  :o

And the Ruger is so heavy, you can always use it as a doorstop.  :-)

Yeah the rugers are heavy compared to a J-frame smith, But still not to bad in a proper holster. And they feel good, and balance nice when your shooting them. I used to own S&W almost exclusivesly but I think the SP101 fits my hand better than any S&W I've ever owned. On the smiths I usually need custom grips or grip adaptors The ruger sp101 fits me just fine as is... ;) In fact mine have become my favorites.

You may be right.  I think I'll wait until sometime in the spring.
