45-70 Hog medicine
« on: January 07, 2004, 06:28:19 AM »
Guys, just got a Marlin 1895 guide gun.  I bought 3 boxes of the Winchester 300 gr. factory loads.  I also bought a set of Redding dies to reload with.

I am going to South Texas this spring to hunt hogs, will the Wincheste ammo work well on hogs?

The Winchesters are good ammo...but try the Federal 300 grain...I got 1 1/2 inch  3 shots at 100 yards with them using a Nikon 3x9 40 scope...there also alittle flatter shooting...just an observation I thought I'd pass on...I shot hogs & deer with them...but I keep going back too my Marlin 336 35 Rem...I like it better and it's just as effective out to 150 yards...besides hog hunting here the shots are only 25 to 50 yards...deer hunting 35 to 100 yards...lot of brush & timber hunting...

Good luck with your 45-70Govt...nice gun...

Steve Pennington,

Find the right ammo for your 45/70 and go hog hunting with confidence.  If you will shoot them anywhere between the ear and shoulder they will drop in their tracks and with no wasted meat at all.  I will make you the same offer as howie1968.  Send me a p.m. and I will send you pics of 8 hogs shot 2 weeks ago in S. Texas.  All but one shot behind the ear and that one between the eyes.  The guns were a 444S and a 450M. You will see what I mean.

Have fun with your 45/70 bro.

I am hunting in South Texas starting April 20.  I am heading down there with the 45-70 and a Ruger 1 in 30-06.  Will post on my results.  I appreciate all the advice.

If you want penetration- try a 405 gr. remington bullet i. I shot through a 5 in. tree and still killed the hog with one shot. Awesome power . Nothing stops that bullet and I mean nothing

Missed_Shot,
Got to agree with you on the 405 grainer, I just got through loading 100
rounds and getting ready to go on a hunt down in tejas. I wouldnt be afraid to tangle with any thing on the north american con. with my 95 gg

Six were shot with a 444S circa 78' and two with a 450Marlin.  The 444S was shooting Hornady 265 gr. factory ammo (I origionally thought I was shooting my BB 270 gr. but wasn't) and the 450 was shooting the Hornady 350 gr. factory stuff.

Jack got up close and personal with his scope on the 450

:cb2: Looks like ya gotta lotta ham and bacon there. Thanks for the great pictures. Tell Jack a Simmons 4X shotgun scope has 5.5 inches of eye relief. I did the same thing with my .45-70 the first time I shot it with a scope on it. I had on safety glasses and wasn't cut, but it sure FELT like it should be bleeding. Ouch. Got rid of the 3x9 and had that shotgun scope on it before dark. Love it.

Again, congratulations on the piggies. Looks like you had a ton of fun.
