CVA Scout 44 Mag

I just ordered one, and was wondering what would be a good Factory round for short range Whitetail hunting.

Winchester white box 240gr jsp is a good place to start. Many find that they need search no farther for factory ammo. If you are into reloading, the sky is the limit with many options open to you. Have fun with the new toy!

I've got one.  Will be using it to deer hunt, here in Indiana this year.  I tried the Win. white box.  It wasn't nearly as accurate as the Hornady 225 gr. LE ammo.
 
Also, no difference in 44 mag ammo.  It's just that in the rifle, with the longer barrel, you will get more velocity than out of a handgun.

Just like any other firearms, some like this brand others prefer something different.
Your factory type 240 gr load should give you 1800 +/- fps.

Ok guys, i got my gun in and some Winchester white box ammo, Now any sugguestions on a good scope for this gun. My longest shot will be about 80 to 90 yards. I would like a scope that is good in low light. Thanks again in advance.

At that range, any good low-power shotgun scope will be about perfect for you.  A fixed 2.5 or a varible with the range of 1.5-4.5 or 5.  Weaver makes a good 1-3X20 that's a nice scope and some of the newer K 2.5's are very clear in low light.  I wouldn't go more than a straight 4 power in case of close in shots.  You didn't mention a dollar range you were looking at.  There is some very good glass now that will not run more than 200.00, Redfield 2-7, Nikon Pro-staff in the same range, Leupold Rifleman or VX-1.  Most glass now days is good enough for legal hunting hours here in Montana and is way better than some high dollar glass from 20-30 years years ago.  But, I do still have and use old Weaver K 2.5's, Redfield Bear Cub and others.  Best thing to do is go to the store and mount the scope on the gunstock they all have to slip the scope in the rubber rings and find the darkest corner to compare scopes in low light.  (Unless ya can talk em into letting you use it in the field. ::) )  DP

I have a Nikon prostaff 2-7x shotgun scope on my CVA scout.  I picked it up from Cabelas on sale for about $130 all in.  I think it will be a great fit for the 44 mag.  Tell you more in about 5 wks., when firearm deer season opens, here in Indiana.

I've had one for several weeks and love shooting it.  So far, it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot what I shoot in it, which is different from my Marlin 1894.  (It likes Hornady HP XTPs, but cast bullets must be a bit large in diameter.)  As for scopes, I have a Bushnell 1-4X30 on mine and it does well.  I have Weaver 1-3X20s on my Marlin 1894 and on my Marlin 336 30-30.  One of those would work nicely on the CVA as well.

For the money it would seem you just couldn't beat a Scout in 44 mag. Glad to hear everyones having such positive reviews does anyone have the shorty 20" barreled model? Been thinking about one for a truck gun.

I might add that I shot a 3-shot group with my CVA 44 mag. that measured just over a half-inch at 100 yards the other day.  I'd like to say it was with some of my reloads, but they were Magtech 240 grain JSP's.

Make sure you loc tite your scope bases and rings before you sight in your new scope. I skipped that step and wasted a bunch of expensive ammo in a 44mag handi rifle. i would be interested in how your rifle groups with the white box win 240 gr JSP.

I likely won't be trying the Winchester ammunition in my Scout .44 as I usually shoot my reloads, but would also be interested in hearing from others how they do.  Late yesterday I had a deer in the crosshairs of the Scout, but it was very late and I was being extra careful; I really didn't want to shoot a little four-point.  About the time I realized a much smaller deer was nearby, confirming I was aiming at a doe, one of them detected me, blew, and left.  Maybe in late January.  Today marks the start of the second regular gun season, and I am back to carrying my Marlins.
