I totally agree with Lloyd.  In 1983 I bought a Ruger M77 Ultralite with a 20" barrel.  I shot the crap out of it using all kinds of bullet weights.  Velocity was within 100fps of advertised with any given load. White tails, pronghorns, black bears, hogs and a host of exotics never knew the difference.  After I burnt out the throat, I had the gun rebarreled, still in 270,  with a 23" shilen (because I liked the way it looked with the longer tube).  Shoots great of course but I sure do miss the handiness of the 20".

The gentlemen are correct.  the difference between a 24" and 20" barrel will be less than an inch in elevation at 200 yards.  In fact, I'd be surprised if it was much over an inch at 300 yards.

I have 2 centerfires with a 20" barrel(not counting ARs) & it's my favorite length for carry. One is a 243 the other my 284win. I really don't care for long barrels when hunting in cover. I took a 24" barrel out a time or two & I'd much rather go shorter.

The real advantage of the 24 inch tube is with iron sights as the longer tube provides a significant advantage in sight radius. Also there is a significant reduction in blast from thelonger tube..  I have hunted with rifles from 18 to 26 inches and find little difference in utility. When still hunting in thick cover one may find some but in most instances if you bust thru tight cover that might hook your muzzle you're not going to see much anyway. barrel length is a vastly over rated problem in a hunting rifle.. If one does not believe this observe the PH's in Africa and their selection of rifles..few stubby ones.. of course they usually use irons but tangling in brush for them can cost one dearly.. The weapon is the strongest link in the chain to taking an animal,, the weak link is the guy behind the butt plate.. Practice correctly and more. Hitting where you need to is the most important part of the shooting end of the hunt.

I have a 21" on my light weight 280 mountain rifle, and it's flattened numerous caribou, white and blk. tailed deer and even blk. bear without problems.  I don't think it makes one bit of difference at any range someone SHOULD be shooting at big game!

Plus one more for short barrels.  I think they are incredibly handy and like it has already been said,  there is not enough velocity difference in most calibers for it to matter.  Cut that 270 down to 20" and never look back.

I cut my Tikka T3 7-08 down to 18 1/2 " and never looked back. Hunt the Adirondacks and like the short barrel better.
Short barrels: Tikka T3, early Rem M7 in 6MM, Marlin 35 Rem, Ruger Compact 7-08.
Deer have never known it was a short barrel.

I love my shortys.  Ruger RSI No. 1 7x57 has a 20" barrel and one of my 300 whispers has a 16" barrel.  Shoots just as well as its 26" twin.  The 16" whisper does wear a suppressor most of the time but when I shoot Supersonics, the suppressor comes off and man do I like it in a tree stand.  Very easy to point and shoot in the woods where I hunt.

I have a Remington 308 with a 20" barrel.  It shoots well below SMA groups.  In terms of muzzel velocity this article is
very interesting.
