SA shooting - Different impact points, Am I doing something wrong?
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:06:00 AM »
Love my Uberti El Patron .45 so far. I have been experimenting with loads to dial in vertical impact point. Shooting at 50' if I do a two handed free hold I am usually dead on POA concerning left or right of the bull. With the same load(s) shooting off a rest (no part of the gun touching the rest) my impact points are generally an inch or two to the left (I am a left handed shooter). Is this typical with SAs or do I have a technique problem? If so, what to do to correct.

If you are just shooting for groups to test accuracy from a rest don't worry about.  After you settle on a load then check to see where they print offhand and if they hit POA offhand good.  Then do some experimenting on hold,  trigger control and your body position in relationship to the target while on the rest.
Just working up loads why does it matter?  I try to sit with the same body angle to the target that I use standing.  I try to hold my arms the same position and grip the gun the same way as offhand.  Many shooters will alter their position on a bench for some reason and expect the same results POA wise as offhand.  It doesn't work with rifles and it doesn't work with handguns.  Except rifles that one just lays on the bags and slightly touches such as the piddling calibers or one that the shooter only shoots from a bag.

It really does not make a difference since I am just accuracy testing and POA/POI testing. More just curious about the difference. My Ruger MKII and my Blackhawk don't change impact point like this did.

Yup you can grip it to high, you can grip it to low and you can grip it canted in your hand, if you don't have a consistant straight back trigger pull on the pad of you trigger finger. All of those can throw the poi to all points of the compass.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

mostly trigger control. Most people have tendency to pull a  bit harder on the trigger when shooting off hand. It takes constant practice to keep me from doing it and to  be honest i havent had a ton of practice lately. Off hand shooting is something a guy needs to work on constantly to keep it sharp.

Hold the revolver in your off hand and place it into your gun hand. Grip it well, find your sweet spot, and memorize it. When you cock it use the off hand, thus not changing your grip, If shooting offhand, calculate your stance and angle to the target, etc. so that when you bench you can get your body into a very similar position. All your muscle groups affect the recoil impulse and thus the POI. If you are constantly pulling shots left (if right handed), place your thumb up along the back left side of the frame and use some counteracting pressure to the trigger finger pull.
