My first Handi coyote!!
« on: September 19, 2011, 07:18:24 PM »
I took a little walk this morning with the Maxi to do some pre season scouting. I was walking up a little trail when I spotted something moving off to the side of me. Turns out it was a coyote and it was digging at the ground. I don't know what it was after but it worked out good for me... it was too distracted to notice me until I raised my Maxi and took aim. It looked up at me just in time to take a 110gr. Hornady hollow point in the right front shoulder. ;D
It's a beautiful 40 pound female with a perfect pelt. As soon as I got her home I called up my taxidermist buddy and asked him if he'd do her up for me. I'm going to have her done into a rug and hang her on the wall. I think she'll go nicely with my Dad's black bear wall rug. :)
She is the first coyote I've ever taken with a Handi and I'm tickled pink. ;D

I didn't think to take pics before we bagged her and put her in the freezer ::) but I'll post pics when I get her back from the taxidermist.

Great job, Spanky!

I noticed that the coyote population is starting to really grow.  A couple of months ago, I spotted a yote, sitting alongside one of the major routes in our area leading to a large mall, during the day.  The shoppers who come up from the city to our area were gawking at it.
There have also been a few coyotes who have traveled down into NYC proper, with one running around Central Park, and another running around Greenwich Village.
I'm waiting for the day when, a yote eats one of the upper East Side princess's toy dogs.  Maybe then the dopes in the city won't be so anti-hunter.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

The bullet went through the right front shoulder and came out behind the left shoulder. The exit hole is pretty good size but Darren (the taxidermist) says it won't be a problem to sew it up. According to my reloading book (Lee second edition) the velocity should have been just over 2300 fps. The load was 20gr. of H110 with a 110gr. XTP hollow point. It hit her pretty hard that's for sure... she jumped up in the air and flipped end over end a couple times then just went down. ;D

Nice goin'.  You can hang the eye teeth around your neck too.    No yotes seen locally so far, but I'm in sluburbia, and don't even see any hogs.  Both around I'm sure, just out and about in the wee hours.

Be well...

Nice job! I want to make it a point to do more coyote hunting, we have way too many where I live.

I am in agreement that we should open coyote season year round..they are starting to seriously cut in on other game species.
Last time I checked, during a hunter-safety instructor's refresher course, we still have a closed season.  Our instructor said it was the trappers (?) who objected to opening season year round.
Don't make sense to me, since there are already too many around...and these big, northeastern coy/wolf cross type are getting more bold every year, it seems.

Here in Michigan we have a season on them. I believe it's from July 15 to April 15, but a landowner can kill them any time they are "causing damage, or about to cause damage."  I never saw one that wasn't "about".  I got home from our trip Monday to find a big doe dead on the road shoulder just south of my driveway.  It now resides in a field out back a hundred yards from my ground blind. ;D   It'll be the little .32-20's turn.

Luckily New Hampshire has no closed season. On top of that we have a special night hunting season from Jan 1 to March 31 where anything goes such as lights and electronic calls.
