Hogs "stock up" on food before winter...[huh?]

Some will write about topics in which they know very little and assume what others tell them to be the truth, then repeat it as if it was true, which perpetuates the misconception.

Experts think the animals were possibly hunting for food. [duh!]  They said the wild hogs generally stock up on food several months before the winter season and become more active. [huh?]

Comments added.  I have never witnessed this latter behavior.  I have always seen them to be voracious eaters at all times of the year.

Somehow the Words Winter and Florida appear to be a oxymoron to me. ;)

I had no hogs coming to corn all summer long, then I heard somebody using fish food to bait a trap. I don't have access to fish food so I put out cheap dog food. They started coming slowly at first and then it picked up.Sunday I could tell they were gitting after it.So I set the trap with corn.6 of the 30 to 35 pounders.Just a pig story for you all.Chuck

I don't know what hogs do in places where they have REAL winter but down here in the deep south them hogs stock up on food every day of their lives and seem to have no trouble finding something to eat. Perhaps when the snow is a few feet deep things are different. Dunno

LO - this is exactly what I have seen in FL and GA for the past two decades.    It is a hard scrabble existence in palmetto and swamp and "dey be hongry all de times"   ;D

Here's a few "stocking up" under my deer feeder back during the blizzard of Super Bowl week...

I would guess that hogs in places where the ground freezes and is covered with snow and ice might put on fat reserves more than where food is aval. year round. I would guess that they may feed more or appear to. Many critters don't eat as much when it is hot only to binge when cooler weather comes and before winter sets in.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

This is a local reporter, a Florida reporter, describing what they had been told, and it just isn't true, not here, not in the palmetto lined, skeeter infested, alligator filled swamp.  So the reporter perpetuates a myth and it deserves to be "BUSTED".

Another indicator of bunk is to quote unknown "experts".  HA!

I guess I am miffed that they didn't ask me...hehe
