If so, what bullet?  What type results?  What twist rate?  Results with various bullets and twist rates?

I started my son hunting deer with a Rem. 788 in .223.  I don't know what the twist was on that rifle but it consistently put 3 - 52 gr Speer HP hand loads into 3/8 to 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

Those are the bullets he used to take 2 bucks and a doe, one shot each.  Two bucks were at about 100 yards each, and shot over a backpack improvised field rest, and the doe at about 40 yards shot off hand.  The 40 yard shot in center chest traveled about 5 bounds and was down.  Of the bucks, one died in its bed, the other made one bound and was dead when we got to him.

These were Sitka Black Tailed deer, so not much body size.  This isn't much for sample size, but shows the importance of where you hit'em and  will give you something to ponder until others respond.

Same here, used a Rem 788. Bullet was the heaviest Hdy HP at the time( 20 years ago) Fallow deer dropped like being pole axed.
