Help with scope mounting please !
« on: September 20, 2011, 10:05:29 AM »
I have the Savage 111 FCNS in 338 Mag. I am having trouble finding rings that will let me mount my new Redfield 2-7x33 scope. The receiver is so long that even the Weaver extended rings on the front barely worked on my old Bushnell, and rub on the power change ring on the Redfield.
Has anyone else faced and solved this problem ?
Thanks in advance to anybody who can share relevant experience !

I don't know for sure but imagine someone makes a Picatinny rail to fit. That would give you more places to mount the rings. Other than that reverse bases or extended rings on both ends seems the most likely answer but no I've not dealt with it as I own no Savage rifles.

I just installed an alumnium one pc Weaver base from Brownells on my Savage 116.  It allowed me to put on a short scope that would not fit otherwise.   I think it was about $26 including shipping.  The one piece base with multiple cross slots is the best way to go with the loooong action Savages.  I have also used the B-Square base but it does not have a thumb slot that aids in loading.

Thank You, Gentlemen ! I will pursue the Pickatinny rail idea, and let you know what happens.

I ran into the same problem when trying to mount a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36mm scope a stainless 114 American Classic.  I tried Leupold mounts and rings then Weaver 2-piece bases but wound up buying a Evolution Gun Works (EGW) base instead.  I haven't mounted it yet but will post a pic once I have it up and running.

I bought the EGW "picatinny" base today online. When it arrives I hope to have no further problems. I have 2 sets of rings, both Weaver. One has the 2 screw on one side and a hook on the other ( I have always hated these...); and the other has eliminated the hook and has 2 screw on both sides. It's gonna look like the Savage GunSite Scout Gun a little, lol. I'll post photos whenever I get it all together.
@ James - I couldn't find anything even close to the price you mention on Brownell's site... oh well.
@Kingstrider - Thanks for the hint on the EGW product. It was 40 bucks, but if it works the Way I want it to, it will be cheap !

I never thought I would turn my bolt action Savage 111FCNS in338 Win Mag into a "black gun", but that turned out to be the best solution !
I bought the EGW matte mount from MidwayUSA. Installation was basically easy, but there were a few hiccups. Some of the screws that came with are long enough to hit the bolt ! I realized it when closing the action it wouldnt go into battery. I also bought some high matte Sure Grip rings from Weaver. These are like the traditional Weaver, vut instead of a "hook" on one side and screws on the other, the Sure Grip has screws on both sides. Thumbs Up ! Getting the reticle vertical/horizontal was tough with the old style; but not these !
Thanks to everybody who replied. There were plenty of one piece bases, but only the rail gave me so much flexibility with eye relief. Fellow 338 Win Mag shooters will appreciate my concern !

Did you get it fixed?  I put a 2 piece weaver base on mine, it was the extended front. I mounted a Nikon Prostaff. it works well. The base extends over the breech but does not affect the loading. Hope this helps.
