44 MAG 200 YRDS
« on: September 20, 2011, 06:42:22 PM »
I took my 44 mag to the range today to make sure the scope is still on.  I shot various groups all under 2in at 100yrds.  There is a 200 yrd range there so i figured why not. I was surprised to find out that this gun can shoot 5in group at that range. I was aiming about 12 to 14in high  using winchester 240grn  factory rounds. Bought this gun to hunt deer with . Shot 2 last year one at 30 the other at 70yrds both traveled less than 20 yrds. I really enjoy shooting this gun and if anyone is thinking about buying one you wont be dissapointed. Now the wait for opening day

Oh yes, the .44mag is absolutely capable at that range if the shooter is up to it. I mean, it's still doing about 1150fps at that range (240gr, 1700fps MV) and will hit as hard as a hot 10mm or .357 at contact distance.

an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

I believe that it will kill paper at 200 but get ready for some serious tracking if you are fortunate enough to hit a deer at that distance

Nice!  I've been thinking about setting up one of these 44mags and this is the kind of report I wanted to read about.

My Handi .44 is reamed to Super Magnum, and I wouldn't consider a 200 yard shot with factory magnum ammo.  I let six deer walk last year because they were out there at about 200 yards and I didn't have SM ammo.  With the SM, there's still  an appreciable  drop at 200, but it'll kill better.  The .38-55 and .45-70 loaded hot are a better choice for longer shots.

In states like Indiana the 44mag is about as big as we're allowed to hunt with.  A couple years ago at the deer check in station I was talking with an older hunter who used a marlin 44mag and said he dropped his monster 8pt on the spot at 210 yards.  He's wasn't some little bragging type either.  I had to ask him about it while we were looking over each others deer.  I don't see why a 44mag from a rifle wouldn't kill a deer at 200 yards unless that deer is somehow related to Chuck Norris, Arnold S., or Steven Segal.  Those guys can walk any gunshot off.

The .44 mag will kill deer at 200 yards, but the SNAFU margin is definitely raised.  My personal ethics simply won't allow it, especially in the evening half light when most deer are seen here.

A 240gr bullet with an impact velocity of 1150-1200fps will absolutely kill a deer, and do it well. I mean, with something like an XTP we're still looking at full expansion and about 24" or so of penetration at those velocities. That will still do way more tissue damage than a non-expanding SWC, and few here would argue against the well-known effectiveness of such bullets.

Now, it does help if you handload, because not many factory loads will push a 240grHP to 1800fps out of a rifle barrel. Though, Buffalo Bore has a 240gr HP load that runs ~1900fps from a rifle, appropriately named the "Deer Grenade." At 200 yards it's still moving along at over 1250fps and if a typical hunting load at handgun velocities can anchor a deer at 50 yards, this load will do it at 200.

I have a friend who has killed several deer at 200+ with his 44 mag Super Blackhawk. The 44 with 240 grain bullets will do it. You have to know your drops, practice at the most extreme range you are likely to shoot and be able to dope the wind accurately. My friend shot up 4 pounds of powder in the off season at ranges of 200+ yards practicing for the season. I would recommend long range shooting only to those that are skilled and well practiced. Most 44 shooters can be effective out to 150 or so with the rifle and 50 to 100 with the pistol if they practice.

If you are skilled enough to hit the mark at 200 yds the 44 mag will put meat on the pole.

Top 44 magnum loads from the manuals are incredible out of rifles.  Enough velocity is gained over a long barreled revolver that the carbine has as much velocity at 100 or 125 yards as the revolver did at the muzzle.  Asking whether or not a 44 mag rifle has the authority to kill deer at 200 yards is like asking whether a 44 mag revolver has the authority at 75 yards.  Of course it does.  The challenge is trajectory.  If you planned on shooting at 200 yards, I would zero at 125 or 150, but then practice, practice, practice both at closer ranges and longer ranges.  You have to know where that bullet is going.

While other cartridges would definitely be better choices at 200 yards, it is a very laudable goal to try to squeeze as much usefulness out of whatever cartridge you choose to use.
