What brass should I be looking to by for the 38-55 I got coming? Says he shot .377-.379 bullets out of it. kurt

Problems came from tight throats. This used star line cases with much success. All others are thicker and can cause problems with bigger bullets.
Shooting .377-.379 you should be fine with any. That's if you have a tight throat...

I too am using Starline with very good results with .378 260 gr. RNFPGCs. My hunting bullet is a custom 213 gr. bonded.

Do you have a die set yet? Fire form some 30-30s to play with it at first and get an idea of the throat and all. BTW, I still havent throated mine and do OK with .379, though I would like to use the as casts at .380. You can 'file thin' a few case necks to find what combination will fit.

I have a tight throat, and due to my inherant laziness, I use Winchester 375 cases and set the boolit out til the action just closes. Mine has the tight throat and shoots most excellent with this method.

Its a SUPER easy and quick job to ream it to .400!!! I think I had a harder time opening the package than reaming the chamber...

Got the .400 reamer from our sponsor 4D and spent a whole lot more time unpacking and setting it up then actually reaming. What CW, 2 or 3 turns?

Thanks guys .I guess thats pretty much what I was looking for as I had heard of using 30-30,375 and thought there was a couple of differant 38-55 cases . I may just buy a couple of boxes of loaded ammo and use that brass for reloading. Kurt

I suggest not getting the loaded ammo, it may be a waste of time and expense with the bore/groove dia. of the barrel. IIRC, the loaded stuff doesnt come in .379 or larger dia. bullets.

I thought I had found one yesterday @.379 but can't find it today. I think what had me asking the ?of what brass was because Graf's lists Starline 38-55 long and short. So if I buy Starline do I buy long or short ? Or should I just buy Wichester brass which list just one ? I do not have dies as of yet. Kurt

This was just discussed not long ago, but FWIW, neither of my 38-55 barrels will chamber the Win brass with a large enough diameter bullet to shoot well, but it works fine with Starline long, both barrels are late model extractors, not ejectors. You can easily solve the issue by renting the .400" neck reamer from 4D tho, lots of info on the 38-55 in the FAQs.

If you get the Starline 'long' you can trim it to really fit your chamber, if needed, and it will likely hold the .380ish bullets you end up using without having to ream the chamber or neck turn the brass.
Worst case is to have to ream the chamber and, IIRC, everyone who has done it is glad they did.

I picked up the gun today sure hope this thing shoots 240gr .380 Oregon Trail Lazer-Cast while I was browsing the numerous tables they have set up that were loaded with a shooters complete estate garage sale prices this is the 3rd time I have picked thru this lot and don't know how I missed it before... but I got a box of ~~500~~ 446 bullets for $24. I have used this bullet type before and the 360gr shoot great out of the .45 Carbine @ .454 Buf Bore velositys. Being hard cast I should be able to CRANK them up some. Kurt

Ok so here is what I am going to do. RCBS Cowboy dies ,the .380 240gr OT Laser cast, Starline long brass and work powders from 1200-2000+fps. Anybody see problems with that? Kurt

Sounds like a good place to start, but I had no luck with .380" hard cast in my 38-55 shorty, couldn't hit the target at 100yds, .381" wouldn't chamber before the neck ream. My 28" Target shoots Cheycast 1:20 gas checked(see FAQs) .380" 325gr Snovers fine tho, I think the softer lead bumps up enough to be accurate, something the hard cast just wouldn't do even at higher velocities. I do have some Hunter Supply .381" gas checked to try in it now that it's been neck reamed.

Dont overthink it, Kurt. Maybe get the LEE mould and cast of WWts and dash of tin. See if the as casts fit the fire formed case mouths and go from there. If you need to size them down a tad from as cast it is easy to make a push-thru sizer (even of alum) at 3/8" (.375) and dowel/sandpaper hone it to .379 or whatever.

And what is your favorite brew? I'm kinda partial to Samuel Smith's from the UK and anything from Spaten,brewed in the country that invented beer. When coin is tight, I like PBR. This satisfies my redneck urges.

Of late its been BECKS DARK... But New Castle Brown and Yuengling Porter are both favorites...
