What Did......
« on: January 07, 2004, 11:22:03 AM »
Seeing this forum is about Bass fishing how did you fare this last Christmas?  I know every year I usually get the odd lure that I never use or the hat with some funny slogan on it like "Kiss My Bass".  For me, this year was a banner Christmas.  From the grandkids, instead of the usual lures or hat I got an assortment of Plano StowAway Utility boxes.   :-D   From the wife I got the trolling motor(Minn Kota Maxxum 74) to replace my old one.   :D   Yes sir, I must have been a REAL good boy this year as Santa was REAL good to me.  Lawdog

Lawdog, I get Bass Pro Shop gift credit cards from my two adult children for Christmas.  I really like this...I live about 20 minutes from a Bass Pro Shop in Nashville, Tennessee.

I guess they decided I didn't own enough clothes.  Didn't get anything in the fishing department except a pair of gloves, but got a new coat, pair of boots, and some shirts and sweaters.

Since I have so much in tackle now they just give me gift cards so I can pickout my own stuff.  I recieved a two $25 dollar and one $10 dollar gift cards for Dicks Sporting Goods and the same for Walmart.  The Walmart in my town is the worst I have ever seen they have very little fishing stuff its poorly setup I have contacted Walmart about it but nothing has changed, I have to travel to other towns to Walmart to get fishing stuff they have more of a selection, 3 times what mine has.        BigBill

Actually I have more stuff than my local Walmart has?? But between Dick's Sporting Goods,  all the Walmarts in my area(5), mailordering from Cablela's, BassProShops and GoFishing.com I do ok.  The only thing with mailordering I plan way ahead so i have it when the season starts and during the season I should need very little.  I have stocked up on everything from Hooks to weights for carolina rigs, line and all lures I buy at least double of everything that works and the hottest baits I buy the whole rack.   Most of my best deals has come from cabela's bargain cave, BPS  clearance and GoFishing.com(great discounts on reels/rods/tackle).  I would never have so much tackle if I didn't shop smart.  I love just getting out and testing new stuff and to my surprise all this stuff does really work!!!!

BigBill,

Most(something like 60%) Wal-Mart stores don't set up their own fishing departments.  They have an outside layout contractor come in and do it.  I know of a Wal-Mart store that is within throwing distance of a prime Bass lake and the fishing department is over 70% trout gear.  The nearest trout water is over an hour away.  These contractors are only interested in getting the maximum amount of merchandise in the minimum amount of space.  What kind of fishing in the area doesn't come into play.  By the way, Kmart does the same thing.  I just wish that Bass Pro or Cabela's would hurry up and build one of their stores out west here.  Both have told me it's in the works but it isn't working yet.  Lawdog

I heard that each sporting goods department head orders what he wants to but what if he's not a fisherman??  I notice when an item sells out the rack is filled with something different. Example they carried Manns crankbaits in the spring by mid summer the rack was empty of the brown ones and was never refilled the very next spring they clearanced all the rest of what was left?  When I contacted their headquarters about their poorly setup fishing department here in my town when other stores had more it was on deaf ears.  With them being sponcers of the FLW tour you would think they would actually be better at it??  And yes here too we ar eaway from the saltwater too and we have saltwater stuff??  That bites when we could have more freshwater stuff here with the wasted space.

I wonder how long it will be before Wal Mart gets a big stake in Cabellas and the outdoor departments are turned over to Cabellas to run.  With Cabellas somehow joined with Ranger and Lund and Wal Mart considering the purchase of OMC outboards, that may be around the corner.

BigBill,

Wal-Marts criteria for a department manager is based on seniority first.  Knowledge of the department comes in only if the stores general manager wants to consider it.

Considering the owners of Wal-Mart I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this to happen.  You must consider that Wal-Mart will only stay in an area ONLY as long as they turn a certain profit margin in each store.  Not dropping into the RED, as the bean counters put it, but just below a certain percent margin.  If the store drops below this line for a certain period of time Wal-Mart WILL close the store with NO warring.  They will move in during the middle of the night with a fleet of trucks, a large crew and empty the store by morning.  Only person to be notified will be the General Store Manager.  I know of at least 13 Wal-Marts that have closed just this way.  It is for this reason that many areas will not let Wal-Mart move into their area.  And it's for this reason that I don't believe that Cabela's will go into partnership with Wal-Mart.  Sorry.   :(   Lawdog
