Wedge issue

I have always put the wedge in left to right. I got a Lyman Hunter the other day and the manual said right to left. I notice the fit seems the same either way.
 
If it is a secret signal, I would like to get it right [correct].

I press them in from right to left but it makes no real difference.  Whatever floats your boat.

My CVA .50 Calibre Mountain Rifle has two wedge pins that hold the barrel to the stock, and through trial and error I found that if I insert one wedge in one one way and then insert the other into the stock the other way, my shot groups went from OK to awesome...
 
There's no set rules as to which side the wedge pin must enter the stock. Some people like the feel of a wedge pin in the palm of their hand while shooting and others do not...it is a personal choice.  8)

because most shooters are right-handed they put'em in right to left. bein' of the "southpaw" persuasion i do it the other way. don't seem to make a nickel's worth of difference. for what it's worth, bubba.

I think that this is a "vanity" issue on the part of the manufactures as T\C does the same thing on the right to left.
 
Perhaps I am a bit "vain" myself as the rifle appears to be a bit cleaner to the eye with the head of the wedge being on the same side as the Lock is.

The bowed wedged issue is exactly why I would rather bow the barrel loop to tighten the fit of the wedge. That eliminates the which way is up problem. I had a CVA Mountain Rifle(why did I sell it? :'( ) that the previous owner took an engraver and engraved "front" and "back" on the two wedges. It was mighty handy during cleaning time.

We can fix that!  Contact Deer Creek at (765) 525-6181 and talk to them about the Deer Creek Rifle.  They bought out CVA's inventory of traditional guns and parts.  They can set you up with a kit.  Be sure to ask about the options as to brass or iron furniture.  Mine is a flintlock in .45 and it is the absolute cat's meow.  They also bought out the Douglas barrels and machinery for black powder barrels and that is what you will get.  In my opinion it is as good as you are going to get, certainly equal to a Green Mountain barrel.

Didn't they tell you?!?  Right to left is a sign of a green horn, and everybody looks to see which way your wedge pin is inserted before they even look at you  ;)   As for which side is up, I could never tell the difference, but there are those that know!

How long you gotta use them front stuffers before your not a green horn?
I always put the wedge in from the right that puts the button on the same side as the lock and the patch box.
It may not be right but it looks a dang sight better that way to me anyway. I've been doing it that way since 71 and no one has ever told me different.

Lakota your right the proper way to tighten the wedge tension is to bend the barrel loop. Although in a pinch out in the field I have bent a wedge or two.

I know what you mean, I sold a Big Bore .54 that I built from a kit with a select curly maple stock. I still miss that gun...I've had a regret about every gun that I have ever sold.

Keith44, Deer Creek does NOT have a web site.  Give them a call and talk to the man.  I think they have pretty well quit advertising the kits in their catalog, but will put one together if someone calls them about it.

Damn! I already stamped 'UP' and 'DN' on all my wedges. I  also switched to right-to-left. There's a lot of science to this.
