Powderman:

I love squirrels any way you can fix them. I see you like dumplings, but they are very easy to make. My mom made homemade dumplings all the time, so I learned from an expert.

Lots of people are really fussy when it comes to dumplings. Mom made hers really thin, and she liked them "tough" and you can take that many ways.
I can also make them like that altho not as good as hers, but they ain't bad.

Now, what I'm getting to is an easy way for you to get all the dumplings you want, and this is as easy as falling off a log. For the "tough" thin dumplings, get you a package of the flour tortillias at Wally World. Cut them in thin pieces, or the size you want, drop em into the boiling or hot dumpling mix with your squirrels. This is so easy, and they are really about as homemade as your gonna get, unless you make em from scratch like my beloved mom.

This is the other way, and I really like em this way, too. Altho my family turns their noses up at me about this type. Buy you some canned biscuits and they come in small or big or big big ole biscuits. It really don't matter. Open the can, put the whole biscuits on a sheet of wax paper with a lil bit of flour sprinkled on it. Take your dough roller and thin them down as thin as you like, and cut them into quarters or halves, throw them into the pot. I love them this way, too.

Hope this helps you, I'm getting hungry, so I'll go scratch up some biscuits or make a country boy dinner.

Best to you. I watch RFD TV with the Cumberland Blue Grass on Sat. nites coming from Rosine, Kentucky, ole Bill Monroe's homeplace. Really like it, you guys have a beautiful state. Now, go get some of them big ole fat Fox squirrels and cook you some dumplings.

Best,

casper_zip aka Bob in SW Louisiana in a devasting drought down here. Land is parched and ponds dried up, even ole lakes are drying up, I'm talking about huge lakes, a lot have already dried up. One, near Shreveport, La. had a huge fire burning in the bed after the water had left.

Hey casper_zip...the drought in Texas and across the south made the news here a while back. I am so sorry to hear that it is still going on. I was hoping that some of the recent fall/winter weather systems that we've had would have offered some well needed relief. I hope that this drought ends soon.

the canned biscuits is the short cut, bisquick is another short cut, but when I have time I like homemade, I use my grandmothers recipie.

Rosine is about 80 miles south east of me, some of it is beautiful country, some well not so much.  'bout like anywhere I guess

ditto what RHI said about that drought

CASPER. We have tried the biscuit ones and they are good, when she gets in the mood to fix them. We bought the WM brand in the bag and were well pleased with them. Her brother works in a restaurant and thats how he cooks them. There are a few fox  squirrels around here but mostly grays, it was the opposite when I lived in ILL.
KEITH. I use the 410 or 20 ga because of the chance of cattle and houses in the area, even though the woods should be safe for a 22. Many yrs ago in ILL my uncle shot at a duck coming off a pond outside of town. That bullet went through a lady's window and hit her cook stove dropping on the floor. He was at least a mile away, I never forgot that, neither did he. Maybe after the leaves are all gone I'll try my 22 when they are on the ground. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Uh Powderman, I am using a pellet rifle, not a fixed ammo rifle.  14.3 grain pellet launched at 820 fps carries about 20 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle.  Out at 70 yards it is marginal for starlings.  Much safer than .22 LR or magnum, and due to the diabolo shape the projectile cannot physically travel that far.  When they are all on the ground is when I want the muzzleloader.

We have a plethora of large grays on our lease and have watched them eat long enough. We are having a one day play to see who can get a limit the fastest. .22's only. Bonus for head shots. Probably stew for supper.I'll maybe get a pic for posterity.

powderman, sorry, misunderstood your comment.  Then yes by all means use the shotgun of choice.  I chose the pellet rifle for the same safety concerns but still keeping the challange of the rifle in the hunt.

All this Squirrel talk got me to thinking of one of the best trips I had with my son a few years back. I just had to post the pic!
What a great time!
