Fire and smoke at night
« on: September 22, 2011, 05:43:44 PM »
A few pictures I was playing with. The first is a home made project made by cutting down a .22 rifle barrel, threading the back, and putting a 3/8 inch hex head screw in. I know nothing of it's strength as a shooter but considering I only put .6-2 grains of powder in it I am not to worried about it's safety. A blow gun makes more pressure ;D

The second shot is a .45 cal stainless cannon eitherfrome Dixie or CVA though I don't remember.

Both shots are dramatic more due to a slow shutter speed than a huge explosion. The little cannon has 1 grain of powder and the bigger one 2 grains.

I'm amazed at the flare from the vent in each picture.  Looks to be nearly equal to the main bore flare, you sure don't want to linger over either of these guys when you light them off.  Nice pictures!

Are these frame grabs from video, or stills?  If stills how did you time it so perfectly?

They are stills. I used a remote shutter release and opened the shutter as the fuse just hit the hole. After the boom I closed the shutter. They are about 1/2 second to 1 second exposures. Like I said above, there is only a tiny load in the cannon, a poof really, not a boom. The camera is set so that it barely exposes the dark surroundings in that short time but captures all the fire, start to finish. It is the same technique used for shooting fireworks.
