Shortening a No4 action
« on: September 23, 2011, 10:25:21 AM »
Anybody try it? Given the flat( ish) reciever walls and the threaded bolt head it seems like it would be an easier project than shortening a Mauser. I believe the biggest challenge would be timing the threads for the bolt head so that the extractor lug wont over or under rotate.Shorten the firing pin from the threaded end and Viola! Depending on caliber , perhaps a magazine could be modified or it could be left as a single shot. With the excellent aperture rear sight, safety and bolt handle, it would certainly be distinctive. Cut the reciever right behind the ring and take out as much metal as needed, chamfer the edges and line it up with a mandril that threads into the ring and has a portion to keep the boltway aligned.I know I'm oversimplyfing, but it seems like a short action No4 could be pretty neat. Calibers could be .45ACP, 44 Magnum etc. Just a thought...
