Are there any decent 40 cal or 45 cal acp's on the market that you recommend for $350 or less?

Not new for $350, but the Rock Island Armory .45 1911 basic military clone comes close, at about $400.  I have one, and its a well made, all steel pistol.  Have about 1500 rounds thru mine now, with no issues.  I thought highly enough of it I mounted a Burris Fastfire sight on mine.  Is it a Kimber, or Colt?  No, but pretty darn close, and a very serviceable pistol.  The Ruger P series are also well made, but under rated guns.  They can be hard to find used though, in 45 acp.  I would stay away from the Llama and Star pistols.  Inexpensive, but not real reliable, at least with the couple I have owned.  Lots of .40 police Glock turn ins on the market.  Might be able to find one with some finish wear in that price range.  A lot of these guns are carried often, but shot infrequently.  S&W Sigmas can be bought for $400 or less, new, sometimes.  Some like them, some don't, but the newer ones seem to be reliable, from what I have read.

Pretty much what BigEasy said....in general , your gonna get what you pay for. I agree , also , some of the Rugers are highly underrated.  I have a P-345 that is worth twice what I paid for it, least as far as I'm concerned. Excellant trigger , has never burped , not even once.. ( maybe I got a good one  ;D  )Fit and finish are as good as a mass produced firearm can be.  Believe I paid a little over 400 for it , would think you could find one for mid 3s .

I'd go with a used pistol in that price range. Police trade-in Glocks and S&W can be had in that price range. My preference would be a used Gen 3 Glock 21, 22, or 23. If this is your first centerfire pistol, I'd avoid the 1911 platform until you gain some experience with centerfire auto loaders.

I would check out used police trade-ins, or possibly the used counter at your local gunstore. I would definitly stay away from Hi-points and all other CAP guns. (cheap a** pistols)
