270 load for elk
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:15:34 PM »
Hi guys :)   Looking for a recommendation for bullet to use on elk for a recoil sensitive shooter hence the 270.  Have some 130 grain barnes x, 130, 140, 150 grain sierra game kings.  Any other bullets suggestions are welcome.  Going out to do a test run to see which ones group the best in the rifle.

Thanks for the replys,

150 0r 160 grain partitions. But all you have listed will do fine.

I found out that the 140 Accubond is a tough bullet with good expansion & the most accurate in my 270. It is yet another to consider.

Elk hunting, recoil sensitive? Can you even mention the two in the same sentence? I would say the Sierra in the 150 class at about 2,700 fps, or what works in that rifle.

Might try some hornady 140 gr interlocs . Good compromise bullet.
But there's no flies in the ointment of the good ol Winchester super x power point 130's,or most any other factory load your rifle likes.
Unless you're planning for next year, the time for load developement of a good handload in your rifle is extremely short... Pickup a couple of boxes of factory made and don't sweat the small stuff.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Load up some 150 Nosler partitions with a healthy does of H=4831 sight in the rifle for the person then don't worry about recoil. When shooting game you don't feel any recoil and most of the time I don't even really hear the rifle go off. Just concentrate on placing the bullet where it is supposed to go.

130 or 150 partitions will do the job. 130s will do just as good but the differnce between recoil with the two is very small so my advice would be to try both and use the one that shot the best.

I consider a 270's recoil similar to a 30-06
For elk the 270 wouldn't be my first choice, being that is what you have I'll vote for Nosler PT's. If going cheap er I mean frugal :D there is nothing wrong with Rem Cor Lokts.

If the 270 is what you got to use then I would go with the 150 Nosler Part. That's coming from someone who took his first 2 elk with a 270.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

Thanks for the replies guys!  I took my buddy shooting again giving him some more range time and got him comfortable with his 7mm rem mag with 160 grain barnes x bullets :)   The 270 with 130 grain barnes x will be a back up and used for mule deer on his hunt.  Always appreciate the advise and suggestions.

There is elk hunting and there is elk hunting... In the timber or open ranges?  The 7mag offers a bit better HP for the task.
I think your heading in the correct direction. Keep shooting and practicing and know his limitations.

Good luck,
