Moose Antlers
« on: September 23, 2011, 05:38:16 PM »
Hi.  My dad has some moose antlers he got back in the early '90s.  He never got around to having them professionally mounted, and they have been sitting in the garage for all these years.  I have a few questions about them.  The antlers are very dirty with dirt, dust, and crud, what can we use to clean them really well?  Another problem is the mice have been chewing on one of the points, what can we use to fill it in?  Does anybody sell mounting kits for moose antlers?  Anything else we need to do to preserve and protect them?  Is this something we can do ourselves, or should we really being taking it to a taxidermist?  Thanks for any info.  Robert

Hi my name is Todd Buchanan and I am a professional taxidermist in Cental Indiana.  First off to clean your antlers I would start with compressed air from a compressor.  After that soapy water and rinse well.  Then let them dry well and maybe use a furniture polish like pledge on them to shine them to there natural luster.  Do not use anything oil base such as WD-40.  As far as the chewed spots from the mice there are epoxy modeling putties available to rebuild them but then those spots would have to be stained to match the original antlers.  I do not know of any home mounting kits for moose antlers.
