Which H&R model?
« on: September 23, 2011, 07:34:57 PM »
I'm not a shotgunner so please excuse my rather rudimentary question.  I'm looking for an H&R shotgun that will handle quail, pheasant, grouse, squirrel and rabbits as well as deer/black bear.  The quail, grouse and squirrels tend to be foothill and mountain varieties.  The pheasant and rabbits are Central Valley (I'm in California) game.  And the deer and bear are mountain species as well, with shots ranging from 50-100+ yards.

While I think the Ultra Slug guns are the cat's meow for big game, am I correct in understanding that a rifled slug barrel is not a good choice for shot?  Will a smoothbore barrel handle modern-day slugs at 50+ yards?  Given the stated parameters for which the gun will be put to use, can you recommend the best H&R/NEF model?  Thanks.

If it was me and I could just have 1 shotgun for all the game you stated. It would be a 22" smooth bore modified choke 20ga. I would shoot 2 3/4" Brenneke foster style slugs and just about any #6 birdshot. The slug will kill any deer and pretty much any Black Bear. The key to what you want for birdshot loads will be to know exactly how it patterns from your gun you could go down to #5 or even up to 7 1/2 as long as you know how it patterns from your gun. Kurt

Kurt beat me to it. The tamer 20 with a regular stock is a perfect do all gun IMO
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Yep +1 on the 22" 20ga Modified choke I have one and it's great for squirrel and rabbit and it keeps foster style slugs inside a pie plate at 75 yards which is minute of deer.

Same recommendation from me unless you are pretty 'beefy' and can take the kick of the 12ga. Do you have any friends with 12s and 20s that you can try a few shots from?
And, the rifled sluggun bores do not like shot!
Get an H&R model that comes with a recoil pad.
