Dang USH!!!
« on: September 24, 2011, 10:01:02 AM »
Dang it, I really don't have a specific need for an Ultra Slug Hunter, but can't take my eyes off them!  Could anyone here talk me out of it and provide pics of their setups to convince me I'm just being silly?  Seriously, I imagine they are being used as deer and bear guns in places of thick cover.  How accurate are they and how happy are you with the gun?  Do they make good pack/canoe guns and which gauge do you prefer?

My son has a 20ga USH and will clover leaf 2 3/4" buckhammers at 75 yards it has a Bushnell banner 1.5X4.5X32 on it. As far as a pack gun not sure I guess that would be up to you, they are a little heavy because of the heavy barrel. In this part of N.Y. we hunt everything from thick cover to woods to open fields and it gets the job done.

They are heavy by todays standards (used to be 'we' didnt mind 9-10# guns), and you will carry it more than shoot game with it. Do you intend to drive game, stalk, or go to a blind and wait?

 I did it once. Bought the 20 version.  One morning got in the stand, 30 min later a buck was a little over 60 yards. I WAS NOT EVEN COMFORTABLE IN MY STAND YET! Gave him a piece of lead. Got my truck loaded him. Then noticed I spilled my coffee cup. I wanted to be in the stand till lunch. Thanks to the Ultra Slug, I had to call it quits early for the morning.

If you want something lighter try a Tracker II Here is my 3 shot group at 75 yards, I had it drilled and tapped and it has a Simmons pro diamond 4X32 master series on it.

CW,

Why did you go and post that pic?  It made me put a couple of boxes of 12 ga buckhammers in my ammo box for my next range trip.  I love those big round holes they punch about as much as I hate the way my light 12 ga punches my shoulder. :o   IMO Buckhammers are the best value in the factory slug market.

Fellas, what's your take on 20 ga. vs. 12 ga. for the USH?  Don't want to open a can of worms.  Just tell me what you are using and like.  From what I'm hearing/reading the 20 ga. seems to be gaining some ground.

Yup, I like 'em too... now just wait till you see the effect on Mr Whitetail!!!

Sierra, pick your poison, either one will do what a Slug gun should!!  Modern projectiles, powders and the ballistics really stretch the distances a shotgun is humane and effective...

All my dedicated slug guns are 20ga now. They kill deer just as dead. I'm not recoil shy by any means, but prefer the 20s

Ol' Ugly .727 OverKill (smoothbore sluggun) is a 'vicious kicking beast', but it goes under 6#. An USH would be better, but I would,given a choice, go with 20ga.;
(whenever I am in doubt of my manhood I take Ol' Ugly out for a shoot  :P ).
