My son joined the club today
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:55:48 AM »
My 12 year old son took his first deer today.

Michigan has a youth weekend hunt, and they need to be accompanied by a non-hunting adult.

About 8:00 this morning he shot a 3 point buck at about 80 yards with my .243 Handi.  Shot went right behind the front leg, and out the other side.  The deer went about 30 yards and dropped.

I have been grinning like an idiot ever since.

What could make a dad more proud than passing on his hunting skills to his kids.  Cant wait til mine are big enough to take out hunting.

Thanks for the kind replies.  I am very proud of him.

I don't know if this is handing down any hunting skills, I have never shot a deer.

The downside to all of this is, I am probably going to have to buy a new rifle.  It will start out innocently enough, with my son saying "I shot it with my Handi rifle" instead of saying "I shot it with my dad's Handi rifle".  Next thing I know, the rifle will be his, and I'll be wondering what happened.

Thanks.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Aaron - I don't have reloads worked up yet that I am confident in.  We are using Federal 100 grain soft points ($14.00/box at Wal-Mart).  I have been getting 3/4" groups with this ammo.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get the gun back or not.  I keep my guns in a closet, with some racks that I built in.  My son keeps his guns in a gun cabinet he got from my dad.  Seems the .243 has made it's way into the gun cabinet instead of my closet.  Seems a bit suspicious to me.

There are far worse ways of losing a gun.

Nothing wrong with those PowerShoks, they shoot well in every 243 Handi I have owned.
That little Handi sounds like a good "gift" too ;D

Tim,

Don't look at it as loosing a rifle. Look at it as an excuse to buy another. To be quite honest it doesn't sound as if you are all that unhappy about your son taking possesion of the .243 and I can't blame you. That rifle will serve him well for as many years as he chooses to use it and you have a memory that will last your lifetime. Seems like a good swap to me!!!

How much did that deer weigh anyway. Thing looks huge!!!!

Love those .243s

Keep smiling!  Good job, both of you.   Give the boy the gun, no questions asked.  He deserves it after all.  There are plenty more guns to be had, but only ONE first deer.
