Magnuum primers
« on: September 25, 2011, 01:53:46 PM »
I was given almost 1000 LRM magnuum primers. They are winchester brand. There is 10 packs nwith about half of 1 pack gone. I don't use mag. primers in any of my rifle loads. I reload 30-06 ,308, 270 win., 243 win., 30 remington , 7.62x54R , and 7.63x39. How much do you have to cut back on powder charges to use a magnuum primer. The shooting here in louisiana never gets that cold. Maybe in the teens but not often. I use in most all reloads IMR powders. 4350,4895,3031 mostly those three . I use cci LRP primers in all but the 30 remington. In it I use remington 91/2.

Zack, there is no formula but that many free primers are worth working with even tho those powders and cartridges really don't need mag caps.  Suggest you back off a couple of grains from your normal charges and test for accuracy and velocity while working back up in maybe .3 gr. steps.

i wouldnt have a problem useing them.if i had a good established load i liked, i would back off 1 grn on the powder and work back up looking for pressure signs.or just use them on light plinker loads.

Like wncchester said I know of no simple or basic amount you should reduce the the load for the same accuracy, ya kinda gotta start from scratch.

I know guy's that use Only mag primers, so they'll work in everything you have.

Work up a load or two for a couple of guns, take good notes and put'm aside for a rainy day

they can be made to work in anything. Ive actually got good accuracy with some loads in cases like the 2506 270 280 06 and even the 243 and 6mm but a case as small as the 762x39 its going to be tough to get them to work. what will happen is the primer igniting will start the bullet down  the bore before the powder is ignited and that will give you pour ignition and probbably pour accuracy.

My hunting/reloading partner says to lower your powder charge at least 0.5 grains.  The mag primer gives an effect of about 0.50 grains to the charge for bottle necked cases (this is not considering the modern super-short magnum cases).  I shoot mag primers in my 270 Win loads (IMR 4831) with EXCELLENT results.  I am also loading in the lower 15% of the manufacturer's powder range with EXCELLENT results.

I solved my problem. Have a hunting buddy that reloads for his son-in-law. He shoots 7mm mag. Gave him a set of 7mm rem.mag dies 100 or so oncefired brass and all the primers. Got an open invitation to still hunt on his lease which is next to my son-in-laws lease. Good deal for me.
