2011 bear hunting
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:04:23 PM »
Anyone hear how the bear hunting in Wisconsin went this year? I stopped in a station in Catawba and was told bear harvest  was slow to my surprise. Lots of bear on the trail cams though.

I'm hearing it's slow, too.  Some say the bears are eating acorns & not hitting the baits.  I'm new to baiting but haven't had a hit yet.  Next I'll sit on an oak ridge where I've seen bears before.  It will be like hunting again.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

I bagged a bear in the U.P. on opening day, the 10th. It was a 240 lb male. I was in a real honey hole a relative set up for me, private land in thick cover. I went in the stand at 12:15 & the 1st bear showed up at 12:40. It don't get better than that. I had 9 bear visits before I took one, 3 at the pile was the highest at one time. I realize many visits were the same bears.

The bait was all gone by 3:30-4:00. I took a bear with about 1 hour of light left. The breeze was perfect for the stand.

I used my 284win & did the suggested magic neck shot, straight down. It was a little on the warm side, we processed the bear right after the hunt.

I'll put in for my points again & in 6+ years I'll probably go again.

I baited for my Dad most all summer. He killed a beatiful (416 pounds gutted) boar on our land in Clark county the second day of the hunt. ;D  It was the 5th bear he saw. It was also one of the best hunts I've ever been on; I was waiting at the cabin and litterly jumped for joy when I heard the shot!

W - That sounds like it was a great hunt. I give credit where it's due, which is to the guy(s) who tend the bait pile for weeks & weeks before the hunt. Nice bear your Dad bagged too.
