357 Magnum Round for Deer
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:12:23 PM »
I have a 357 Magnum handi rifle I hope to deer hunt with this year.

I am torn between loading some of the 158 gr SJFP  or buying Buffalo bore 180 LBT rounds.

Any suggestions? I also may cut the barrel back to 16-18 inches if that effects the decisions.

If the 158 are the weight to go, any loads would be appreciated.

 THanks.

Try this load, 158 grain Remington soft nose flat point, 17.5 grains of Lil-Gun, CCI mag primer. My grandson has taken 2 deer with this load. Both pass throughs, both 20-30 yards to recovery, good blood trails, farthest was 58 yards, boiler room shots. This load was w recommended by Jerry Lester, who had taken over 50 deer with it at the time. So i call it the "Jerry Lester" load.

Either should work inside 50 yards.  Any further, I'd probably go with the BB load

My .357 Magnum hunting load is 158 gr. JSP or JHP over 17.0 gr. H110. for 1800+ fps.  I chose it because it is the most accurate magnum load out of my Handi Maxi and will dump a deer just fine.

Two of my favorite bullets for use on deer with a carbine in 357 Mag are the Hornady XTP 158 FR bullet and the Speer 170 GDSP.

I'm curious about this too, I use Fed. Amer. Eagle 158 gr. jsp and I have not taken a deer with that load yet, but from reading this here I'm starting to 2nd guess that loads ability to take a deer cleanly at the 90 yards I have to shoot. I know that shot placement is king, but should I be bumping up to the Buf. Bore too or do you think that would be good to go?

Off the top of my head I dont know ballistics of this loading. But, I believe its considered a full house loading. Being its loaded with the preferred JSP bullet and fired from a Rifle/Carbine barrel. I would be confident using it for deer with in 100 or so yards.

My grandson also took 2 deer with the 357 handi using the XTP 158 loads, I use 13.8 gr of 2400, that turned out to be the most accurate in my gun. Performed just fine, I would say stay under 100 yards with it, the grandsons shots were between 50 and 70 yards.
