223 to 375
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:22:51 PM »
I have been making 223 cases into 375 bullets for a few years. I simply anneal, cut the cases off then trim to the base of the neck length of a 221 Fireball (W/a Wilson trimmer) chamffer in and out a little, Then wash, tumble, wash & pickle and wash (distilled water). I made a board w/3/8" holes to hold the cases in a line and fill w/ molten PURE lead. Then lube with Imperial sizing wax, run them into a Fireball  FL sizer  in steps to form the ogive then chuck them into a 1/2" elec drill in a vise and finish shape the lead  nose w/a mill file. They come out at about 310 grains and I use them in my 375/06 Ackley at close to 2050 FPS. They shoot about 2" at a hundred and it seems that there is not much difference in what cases are used, my guess is that the anealing? pretty well evens things out. I have shot only one deer w/them (doe @ 20 yds) and the innards were sticking  out the other side when I turned her over so they work for me and are really cheap for bullets that heavy with no need for buffalo penetration. I need to find another fireball die and grind it off for one about 230 gr. for gophers!-Muddy

Cat W. Sorry I don't have a D camera but I'll tell you exactly what they look like. A 17 Fireball (221 FB) headspace guage with the shoulder a full cone w/ same degrees as the shoulder w/ the last approx 1/8" of lead. I just put them in the drill and filed the point to the same angle. Could make them like a grand slam nose I s'pose but...-Muddy
