Suggestions Needed
« on: September 26, 2011, 03:56:04 AM »
I am having a tough time making up my mind and may be overlooking a better fix. I have an old three screw Rugher SBH that I have had for a lot of years but has never performed as it should. After doing some recent measuring I now know why. Cylinder throats are fine at .4315, but the bore slugs out to .433. I could ream the throats oversize and shoot appropriate bullets, but as I have never cared for long barrels have contemplated a four and one half inch with a better front sight and .429 bore. You have likely run into this before, what is your fix? Thanks Veral.

My recommendation is to open the cylinder throats to about .001 larger than groove diameter at it's largest point, which will probably be at the muzzle.  The gun will become a tack driver, and you can do all the work yourself for very little cash outlay.  All you'll need is a pack of our push through slugs and a lap kit, which will do many guns.
If you have your heart set  on a shorter barrel, perhaps you could get the existing one shortened and a new sight attached for a lot less money than for rebarreling.   If you do rebarrel, you'll have to do a good job of selecting a smith or the new barrel will end up with a choke at the attachment threads, just like factory barrels do.

I like 4 to 5 inch barrels best on revolvers also.
