Name That Gunfighter 20
« on: January 08, 2004, 05:48:03 AM »
“The gunmen snickered, so Carson and ___?___ came charging through the saloon door a half hour later and that’s when the lights went out.  Carson was dead almost before he could swear.  Tom Henry shot him in both arms, and the rest of the gang riddled him with bullets.
“The gunmen unfortunately concentrated on the wrong man.  ___?___’s guns were booming too.  He instantly killed “Big” Randall, shot West twice through the body, and put a bullet through Henry’s leg.  In the confusion, Henry and John Dorsey, who were unscathed, escaped out the back door.  When the lights came back on, ___?___, also unscathed, sent Randall’s remains to the cemetery, and West to jail.  A doctor wanted West hospitalized, but ___?___ ignored him."

Aw gosh, you just say that to make me feel good.

Well, it's about time.  Don't think it's as hard as you're making out, though.

Howdy Hamp,

I'm going to take a shot with this old scatter gun into the bunch, and say Dave Rudabaugh.

Was it Deputy "Mysterious" Dave Mather?

The Lady's done gone and done it again.  She obviously didn't think there was anything "mysterious" about Mysterious Dave.  Good job Lady GB.

Doc, thanks for the effort.

Hext, you really let me down this time - thought sure you you had the answer.

I just haven't decided if I'm retired or in my prime.

Thanks for that last post.  That's a real relief.  I was afraid you were coming down with that "oldtimers" disease you hear so much about.

I had been reading about John Joshua Webb and remember reading this.

On January 22, 1880, Marshal Joe Carson was killed in a shootout in the Close & Patterson Variety Hall. Carson shot the four assailants, one mortally. Another was seriously wounded and arrested. Tom Henry and John Dorsey, though wounded, managed to escape. On February 5, the whereabouts of Dorsey and Henry was learned; they were at the house of Juan Antonio Dominguez in Buena Vista, thirty miles north of Las Vegas. A posse comprised of J. J. Webb, Dave Rudabaugh, and five other men, surrounded the house and called for the men to surrender. Dorsey and Henry complied after assurance of protection from the citizens of Las Vegas was given. This assurance would be hollow as the men were lynched within hours of their jailing in Las Vegas. Soon after Carson’s death, "Mysterious Dave" Mather would be named marshal and J. J. Webb policeman.

I went back and did a search on Close & Patterson Variety Hall and found the answer to Hamp's gunfighter #20.

Lady Greybeard,

Pardon me for being forward, without being properly introduced and all, but I must say that was pretty slick with the back search.

My Hat is OFF to you.

I'm the one with "oldtimers .......mmm", well whatever it is.
