ATV Accident
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:29:45 PM »
My son and I had an accident on our ATV this evening. We were going up hill, Jason driving and me on the back, when we realised the lip of the hill was too steep. Jason stopped so I could get off but before I could the brakes failed and we started rolling backwards. It threw me off and I landed extremely hard on my left hip. It's pretty bruised and the ATV rolled over my left ankle. Both shoulders are wrenched too but I don't think anthing is broken. I think I'm ok but really sore all down my whole left side. When it rolled it threw Jason off too and then rolled over him. He landed on his back and used his arms to push it on over him. In doing that he badly hurt his right arm. He just left to meet his wife at the hospital. Pretty sure he fractured or broke his right elbow. His arm is swollen pretty bad. I'm going to wait till morning to see how I feel and will determine then if I need to go too. Heck of a start to Archery Season. Gee and tomorrow is my birthday too.

If a broken arm and some bruises is all that happened to you count yourselves blessed.  I know of several individuals who faired much worse when they had mishaps on their ATVs.   As a mater of fact one young man from our church is currently on our prayer list with a ruptured spleen along with other injuries from an ATV accident.

SPIRITHAWK. Prayers sent friend. Around here atv accident are common. There have been folks killed, others crippled. One guy turned one over on himself and badly damaged his brain. Kids from up the road drove us nuts all summer running back and forth clear up til 2 am at times. They would have anywhere from 2- 5 kids at a time on one atv. A neighbor talked to the parents about the obvious safety factor of having so many kids on board. he was basicaly told to mind his own business. God blessed you my friend. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

Thanks guys. We were trying to be careful. Had the breaks held everything would have been fine. Jason often drives as I ride. The ATV has become my legs and we hunt close to each other due to my health.  He was able to jump clear but it bowled him over when it rolled right into him.

I just talked to Jason. He was just now leaving the hospital. He broke the radius bone in his arm and has to see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. It may require surgery. If not, they'll put it in a cast. Any way it goes that pretty much kills Archery Season for us. He won't be able to draw a bow for quite a while and I won't hunt alone even if I'm able. Still not sure about my ankle and hip. Both Jason and myself feared my hip was broke and as hard as I hit  it almost seems impossible for it not to be. I couldn't get up by myself and lay there till I got up the nerve to let Jason help me up. I'm thinking it was the back rack that slammed into my ankle as it rolled. If anything on me is broke it's my ankle. It's swollen and my toes feel numb. I have it in a brace for now. The ATV is a Honda Rancher and not a small ATV. I concider us lucky as it could have been worse and I'm glad we were together. Looks like I'll spend my birthday either in bed or the ER. Heck they know me by name at the ER. lol I turn 58 in a few hours and I just don't bounce well any more. Jason is tough and still patroling tonight rather than getting someone to take his shift. Just talked to him again and he promised to just hang out at the Hilton till his shift is over. The Hilton is one of his contracts for security. Well guys, my bed is calling to me louder by the minute

Watch that hip, Spirithawk.  Broken ankles are bad, broken hips are deadly.  You should probably get checked just to be safe.  Sometimes a hip will have a closed fracture that has very few symptoms, including pain.  The wrong move or too much pressure and it can "open" leaving you immobile and in agonizing pain wherever you are.  They can also cause you to bleed out into your pelvic basin and the only symptom is getting a bit woozy then falling over dead...   :o   I have personally seen this.  Anyone should get checked out, but if you'll never see the front side of 60 again (I have no idea how old you are ; ) ) you should for sure see a doc.
This that I do, I do by my own free will.

Take WylieKy's advice, get the hip checked.  It's always better to be safe rather than sorry.
Get well soon, to both you and you son.

Have that hip checked out. My mother broke hers and walked on it for a week. One morning she couldn't get out of bed. Called an ambulace and got her to the hospital. She never made it home from the hospital. I hope and pray that doesn't happen to you.

First hope you and your son are not seriously injured.

What you described is an all too common occurance here where so many people ride ATVs.  Many Doctors here hate ATVs, due to the injuries they see.   In the villages that is the only transportation for many families.  You will see six and seven year olds driving them.

One of the first experiences I had.  I had bought a Suzuki two wheel drive.  My wife was on the back and like you we were climbing a small hill.  Suddenly I realized the machine was rearing up and going over backwards.  We bailed off, but I pushed her to the side, out of the way.  In doing so I got caught underneath the machine.  Nothing broke, but I was sore for many days.  Every month or so we hear about someone getting killed while riding ATVs.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Thanks guys. Turns out my ankle is fractured about 2" above the ankle bone. My hip bone is severely bruised and my left shoulder is jacked up but I'm alive so ahead of the game. Jason may require surgery on his arm and see's a surgeon Monday to find out. No Archery Season for us but we're hoping we can still make the 3 day Managed Muzzleloader Whitetail hunt the 24th of next month. We were finaly drawn after missing out the last 4 years. I'm sure we'll figure a way. I'll put a bipod on Jason's muzzleloader so he could still shoot. Trying to stay off my ankle but it's hard for me to just lay in bed. Can't sit for long because of my hip. At least I got calls from my sister and my children wishing me a happy birthday so the day isn't all bad. :)
