You don't find it a bit barbaric for the punishment for a nonviolent crime like this to be death?  Different lands / different rules is one thing, basic human rights is another thing entirely.  In my opinion, this crosses the line.

Using my own yardstick on this the answer is YES. However my yardstick isn't applicable here and basic human rights if you have any at all are subject to interpretation by the legal and religious  authority in that country.  So the "Line" isn't in the same place.
 
For comparison, in the western world you get in trouble if you smack your wife or any other female regardless how much she provoked or even attacked you.
In Muslim countries( plus a few non-Muslim as well) you be the laughing stock if you didn't.
