My ejector is drooping!
« on: September 29, 2011, 08:01:34 AM »
This has likely been handled before but I didn't find it in FAQ.  I recently received a wonderfully accurate 7-08 ejector barrel from Oldsoldja and installed it onto my .223 frame.  It fit wonderful the first time and only required a little stoning on the latch to increase the lockup.  The only problem I have is that the ejector droops when the barrel is fully open and the cartridge slides over it.  I have not owned an rimless ejector barrel before (my .223 being an extractor).  Not wanting to jam things up, I haven't tried to close the action that way so I can't say if it will slip in where it goes properly or not.  On my extractor barrel .223 the extractor stays up and the rim drops into it when loading.  The same with my old topper 30-30 ejector barrel.  So I'm thinking of adding more pressure to the little spring that holds the ejector up so the rim will drop into the proper place and the cartridge and ejector will both move forward together as the action is closed.  Is this the correct thing to do?  Or is it designed to droop and the cartridge slide home as you chamber it, then the ejector will drop under the rim as you close the action?  Thanks for a quick reply as I'm using a public computer since the home one is on the fritz!  (I can't believe how bad withdrawl is when I can't check Graybeard!)  44 Man

Lewis, be thankful that's all that's drooping ::)   Patty's ejector 7mm-08 does the same thing and works fine......if you like ejectors.  This and the .32-20 are soon to be extractors.

You might get something at one of those Canadian pharmacies....wait, different subject.

I have 2 that do the same.  As long as it chunks the case out you're ok.  It will slide under the rim as the barrel locks.

I put a thin shim under mine. Takes care of the problem. I had exact same issue.

Pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work. I have two with ejectors. Push the cartridge all the way into the chamber, close action, shoot, and eject. Works every time.

44,

If your ejector stays in that position for more than 4 hours you have to take it to a gunsmith. ::)   My exjector barrels are like yours so you should be good to go.

As long as it ejects and doesn't miss the rim, what's to worry about.  8)

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.  Based our your feedback, I loaded an empty, dropped it all the way into the chamber, then closed the action.  Nothing jamed up.  Opened it again, and it ejected the empty just fine.  I did this several times and all is working fine.  I only noticed this drooping after I was at the range and I didn't want to jam it up there where I had no tools.  I guess I should have taken my targets and given the barrel a cigarette after this fine shooting session.  Thanks again.  44 Man

Hey Lewis!

My 7x57 has done that since I got it.  Seemed strange to me at the time but it's always worked fine!  I gave up wondering about it since it wasn't a problem!   ;D
