Ruger M77II Firing pin strikes off center 6.5x55
« on: September 29, 2011, 10:52:43 AM »
The strikes are noticeably off center on the primer. They are not oval shaped and the firing pin hole is not oval shaped on the bolt face. The gun is like new and looks fired little. Only about 20 shots fired by me, no misfires. Most all on WLR primers handloaded in WIN brass. Brass appears normal.

The pin hole in the bolt face is not noticeably off center, but I haven't taken a caliper to it, but I will.

Is this just sloppy craftsmanship?

If the pin hole in the bolt face is centered, then does this mean the receiver or chamber or locking machining is misaligned? That I assume would be a major defect.

What are the effects on accuracy of off center strikes?

Thanks.

While this may not be common, it is not unusual to see an off center firing pin strike.

I doubt you will ever be able to see this show up as a negative in your groups and the critters which fall to your rifle sure won't care.

And yes, something was not perfectly lined or set up someplace in the manufacturing process, but ----------

Thanks, though this discovery does not impress me with the Ruger engineering here.  I have never had a rifle that was even noticeably off center before this one, and that's a good many rifles.

Guess you have just not seen them, as they are there and as I said, Not to worry, everything is good as long as it goes bang!

Different then a firing pin slightly off center, but I once had a post 64 Winchester M 70 that had a tight spot in the barrel.  Not a bulge, a tight spot.  And much more recent, a Browning "A-Bolt" that had a barrel which looked like it had had a threading tap run down the bore.

Now that was something to be concern about, as even though they would both go, "bang" they shot VERY badly

I'd be more inclined to blame winchesters laziness here than the ruger.

Its a well known fact that win is lazy and makes 6.5swede brass on an undersized .473" or 308 sized case head vs the proper .480" case head

this alone could provide enough wiggle room to have an off center pin strike
