IL Youth Deer Hunt
« on: October 01, 2011, 02:53:03 AM »
If all works out I will be down at the buddy's lease with my 15 y/o on the youth deer hunt.  I plan to set him up with my Knight(Elite) & an 85 grn charge of Blackhorn 209. We will shoot some more today. There are some nice bucks on the camera but I'm really out for that close range anterless shot. Of course a fair sized buck would be fine too.

If he gets one I plan to go all out & have it processed by the local meat guy.

Good luck to you and him. I love it when my boy or daughters go. They are to old for the youth hunt, but still like them to go with me.

He shot the Knight yesterday, 80 grains of B209 & a 250 grn SST. They all went into one elongated hole at 30 yards. Yes that is a shorter range, but the stand I have in mind won't offer a shot much further. He said the kick was less than expected, I may bump the charge 5 grains or so.

The hunt went great. 35 min after legal shooting light this guy came by. It was a 15-20 yrd shot, he went about another 30, all down hill. I had bumped his charge to 85 grains. He's at the butcher shop & we will get a Euro mount.

Yes, I took some nice pictures where the deer went down, he did have a smile that came very naturally. I don't have a real good reason, but I just decided to let him post any pictures he wanted out on the web. I know we see them all the time & it's no big deal, but I'll leave that to him. This is his 1st deer, no more 'youth hunts' since he'll be 16 next spring.
