I use a .17 HMR barrel on my Contender carbine on woodchucks with great results.  It is a sure killer within 150 yd., and I have shot them at up to 175 yd.  Usually just bang, plop!  With the barrel's great accuracy and flat trajectory it's hard to miss if I do my part.  I have also had a Ruger 77/17 that gave similar results.

ME!  Yesterday I bought my 2nd Ruger 77/17.  I had one and it had some issue with the dovetail cuts being off center...I sold it and bought a Savage 93BV...very nice but too heavy.  I sold the Savage and bought yet another 77/17.  Needs trigger work big time. Mounted a Weaver Classic V 4/14/44AO on it.  Will shoot a few boxes before I tinker!
 
BTW...I use it for...whatever...I just like the caliber!

Yes i use it to shoot praire dogs, and it does a great job on them out to 150 yards and beyond,great little round

I have one and like it great for shooting  varmints in semi populated areas.
Lived in So Cal for years and we had lots of ground squirrels that I was asked to get rid of to keep them from undermining a bridge and to keep them from killing an avacado grove.  The rocky area had 22LR rounds zining off like a 50's war movie.
 the 17 if it hits anything comes apart and the small fragments do not go far. 
The down side it the 17 while lazer like ballistics does have a small problem when you hit bone in small game you want ot eat.  Creates a mess.
