powder spray
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:59:20 AM »
Loading 220gr hornady for my DW375sm I tried imr 4227,a1680,rel.7, h110 and when I shoot I feel what may be powder coming back hitting my cheek,I do roll crimp,no max load per.hornady manual and cc1 200 anyone have an answer as to what this is and how to fix it. By the way 22gr H110 was the most accurate.

You can rule our powder by shooting with the wind rather than into it. I'd be more suspicious of gas blowback. Are you getting full obturation (look for soot on the cases), are your primers pierced? I usually don't feel unburnt powder grains but I find them on my face or shooting glasses.

Is BBL / CYL gap correct ? Tighten it up to where it will turn when hot and not bind.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Try CCI 550 primers.  H4227 sometimes needs Magnum primers.

Barrel was checked prior, (.006 gap) cases are clean,no wind, primers look good, forgot to also mention it's an 8" barrel not that it should matter. When it hits me its like a lite sting and it's all rounds not just some.

that is odd. ive no experience with the other powders but 4227 always seemed to leave sum unburned powder residue but never any blowback in 357 loads.could it be a timeing problem?even if all the powder is not burning it should not come back at yu.

I had an old Iver Johnson Target model .22 revolver , that went out of time due to wear . It would shave lead off the bullet and send it back like little pieces of fire . I snapped the firing pin off and threw it in the kids toy box .

Here is how to check if the cylinder is locking up properly and tight. Cock the hammer back and hold the hammer with your thumb and pull the trigger and let the hammer down half way and hold it there. Now with your other hand try and turn the cylinder back and forth. If it moves very much then you will need to replace the cylinder lock.

Hillbill thats a good idea I'll have to try it. Shot 1 the cylinder locks up good there is just enough movement to feel it. There are no markings at all on the nose cone to indicate anything has touched it. I am the second owner of this monsoon made handgun the first being an old man who had passed away. It has probably seen less than 200 rounds through it. Just weird,I'll try wrapping it in paper and see what happens, thanks.

Ok her goes,I put a damp paper towel behind the cylinder about inch, blew it all to heck,so then I tried a pc of standard powder and blew that apart but I did notice some black specs, not alot but some. That paper almost looked like it went trough a lawn mower. Prior to that when I open the cylinder a few small pieces of copper shavings fell out.

I try to run a .004 or less . I was thinking DW sent a feeler ga that was .004 . But may be wrong. I would try a closer gap.

Shucks, the DW's are strong and i can't imagine them being out of time. The DW barrel/cylinder gap is .006 but i have used .004 on mine too. I would remove the barrel and shroud, check everything including the possibility of a damaged forcing cone and reassemble it.
What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger!

Prior to shooting and again afterwards I stripped it and set the gap and theres no marks other than a bit of residue on the forcing cone. Just thinking by chance could I have gotten a bad batch of bullets (hornady 220gr.) I have some 200gr.sierra that I will load up a couple and see what gives.

Shot again same thing and accuracy aint good. I think (as much as I hate to)its time to go to the shop. I've got a few bullets left so I'll try win.296,might as well add that to the list.

Try a wood dowell down the bbl to see if the side of a cyl wall is not in line. Pull trigger like shooting on an empty gun , hold and slide a dowell in to see if it hits. A dowell about the size of the bore ( pencils work and come in many sizes) hold to each side and top and bottom.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I used an arrow shaft .310dia. and I can feel it catch lightly on 1 side in the same place with each cylinder. So I think that means it is slightly out of wack isn't it.

The Dan Wesson forum has very good instructions, for the dis-assembly and maintenance, of all of the DW Revolvers.

Discussed it with a member on dw forum that may have the answer. With me shooting from a rest the way I was my cylinder is directly behind where I rest the gun so the blowback is likely bouncing off the rest and coming back. So if that's it I need to really work on a good load.

That doesn't explain the jacket material shavings, only how they are getting blown back at you.

The shavings were one time that I noticed. When I was setting up for reloading I did have a few of the that I got with the gun deal that were cut down a bit to far so they get flared out much or not at all,and maybe while loading they shaved the bullets, maybe all this is just wishful thinking but I will be testing again. Now could the back pressure I got effect the accuracy that I was lack of.
