Called in my first coyote today...
« on: January 08, 2004, 04:36:12 PM »
Well I did it finally…I called in my first confirmed coyote…it was too cool.   Here’s how it went down today.

One of the part time ladies where I work knows I’ve been out trying to call in predators. So I was at work today and she calls about 10:00 am tells me she just spent a half hour watching a coyote play in the field. She says “too bad I didn’t have my gun I could have came out”. I told her my rifle was at the shop with me. Iris says, “well, I wish I had known I would have called as soon as I saw it”. I tell her maybe this weekend I will stop by and try calling at her place.

About 1:30 pm one of the girls in the front office comes back and says Iris just called and said to tell you he’s back out there. Well I was running a job on the press and had about 30 minutes to finish and then had to go do the deposit. I figured “just my luck”.

I get done running the job, go to the bank. After doing the deposit I think “well I’ll run out to Iris’s and see her and see where she had been seeing them”.  So I stop by and she meets me on the back deck, she points to the east end of the field and says that’s where she saw it last. We were looking around and didn’t see any thing, I turn and look out to the north and about 500 yards out is a dark spot in the field, I look through the binoculars and what do you know… it’s a coyote.

We watched it for about 10 minutes work a small area in the field and I decide to get the hand call out and try. I give about 30 seconds on the rabbit call, nothing…pays me no mind. So I try again, only a bit harder and louder…up comes its head and looks right in our direction and then starts trotting toward us. I tell Iris it heading this way, so here we are, on the deck both of us glassing the coyote. He comes about 100 yards closer and stops at a fence line, I hit the caller again and boom he back on his way…at about 250 yards out I stopped calling and we just watch him continue on it till he’s about 80 yards straight behind her house, walking along a row of corn stubble. Nice size coyote with a beautiful full coat.  I told Iris,  “I must be doing something right, was amazed I call it in” Iris couldn’t believe it worked.

Anywho…don’t laugh at me too much or cuss me out, but I had figured since I didn’t leave the shop for awhile since she had called last, I was at the bank for 20 minutes and then drove out to her place. I didn’t think I would have any chance of seeing a coyote, so I left my gun at the shop. So he’s still roaming around out there, and I will catch him later. But I am stoked that I actually called one in, I am going on my second year of calling and had not seen anything, well to tell ya, I was getting a little frustrated. But now I am on cloud nine. It was just awesome to watch him come in. Next time I will have my gun with me.

Thanks for listening,
Bill

Good job Bill.  That coyote will probably still be hanging around in that neighborhood when you make it back.  Sounds like he has a pretty easy life there.  Next time take your rifle, make a good stand, and try a different call.  He knows what that one sounds like and may not respond.  Give him a different sound though, and you might just have some fur.

Good luck and welcome to the fold.  If you're like most of us, you're now addicted and will be calling in all your spare time.

Hey Bill     I think you are going to be addicted like DesertRam say's we all are.

I dont have much to add to his good advice right now. My first priority here is to make sure the vehicle is out of sight. Also to use the natural landscape to get to the call site undetected.

Wow, way to go Bill.  That should get the fire burning.  Just remember, they are just dogs...smart, wiley and cautious....but still hungry dogs!  Get that sucker!

One late moon lit night outside our bedroom window, first of october I think, it was warm enough to have the window open a crack.  There's this coyote not 20ft from my bedroom window howling.  They're out there just waiting for us!

Hope you dont have nightmares about not having your rifle.  My .270, my .270...my kingdom for a .270! :)
