Question for smokers

Can those of you who smoke answer a question I've been wondering about for years? Why do smokers open their car windows a few inches when they are the only ones in the vehicle?

I quit 2 1/2 years ago, but here is my take. There is a big difference between smoking a lit cigarette and smelling stale smoke in your car. I also wanted to minimize the smoke smell on me. That's why I did it anyway. I also dumped ash trays all the time because of the stale smoke smell.

I hate to see kids in vehicles with an adult smoking, I feel the adults should be arrested and go to prison for child endangerment.
 
Smoking is really funny too me, especially when you see fireman firing up a smoke after they have removed their protective gear to prevent smoke inhalation.

I don't smoke, but I did work for a company which before smokers were made into pariahs, furnished a "smoking room" for the resident smokers.  After walking by it a few times while someone opened the door..I truly wondered why anybody had to light up while in there.  The smoke was already so thick..it could be sliced with a knife...

I helped my friend who had a painting business. I painted a room that had so much residue from the man who smoked that I wondered what it did to his lungs. Well he died 2 years later of lung cancer.

 Pretty sure it was not a question of WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PEOPLE SMOKING A LEGAL PRODUCT?
 
 That said I also use my window for an ashtray, except the butts go in a bottle with a lid.

My grandmother died of lung cancer and not only never smoked but was never around anyone who did.  Good friend is presently dying of lung cancer and he to has never smoked and only been around people who do in passing.  NOW with that out of the way, even though the OP has decided to take his own thread off the original course, most smokers leave the window cracked to flick ashes outside to avoid keeping the mess inside.  If you were taught proper driving skills when you were young, you were told to keep a window cracked open to allow you to better hear outside warning sounds to make you a better and safer driver.  I haven't smoked in around 15 years and I still leave a window open unless on an open interstate at high speed.  I guess proper driver safety skills are only important to a few of us.

Just remember, lung cancer can be caused by many, many different things so the next time you hear of someone with lung cancer don't just think it was caused from smoking!!!

Oh thank you I forgot. The adults I have seen smoking with kids in the same vehicle had the windows down a few inches too. Didn't then and never will make any sense too me.

Awesome point! I have to say I was surprised to hear the ashes were being flicked out of the window by some.

I quit smoking about 8 years ago, but the reason I opened the window while smoking in my car was to flick the ashes out and to let the majority of the smoke outta the car... never used the ashtrays in my cars.

Oddly enough, I didn't start smoking until the last semester of my senior year in college... but that was back before they released all the harmful things smoking did to you.

But there's no doubt about it... if you smoke, you're just killing yourself... any idiot could figure that one out and I finally DID!~!~!  Hahahahahaha...

Don't you think it should be the choice of the owner of the bar or restaurant, whether or not they allow smoking in their establishment? How is it the state governments position to outlaw a legal activity in a privately owned establishment? Or anyone else's business for that matter.  I'm getting sick of government trying to save us from ourselves, and people are applauding the fact that government continues to make laws to tell us how to live.

Don't you think it should be the choice of the owner of the bar or restaurant, whether or not they allow smoking in their establishment? How is it the state governments position to outlaw a legal activity in a privately owned establishment? Or anyone else's business for that matter.  I'm getting sick of government trying to save us from ourselves, and people are applauding the fact that government continues to make laws to tell us how to live.

Smoking is very unhealthy and nonsmokers shouldn't have to breath the effects of it. I am a nonsmoker so any place that is banned from smoking is fine by me. I don't go to bars so that's a mute point.

Amen.  In Ohio there were "Private" clubs established to try to get around the ban, but the State came back and said that if the "Club" had 1 or more hired employee smoking was illegal unless it's a private residence.  My sister-in-law gets $1800.00 a year to paint her house because she lives next to AK STEEL and her house turns black.  Bet that crap's worse than smoking.

I quit about 14-15 years ago. Last 10 years that I smoked, it was cigars, and I quit inhaling when I switched from cigarette's, so it was easier to quit. I guess I rolled down the window, cause smoking a stogie made alot more smoke that a cigarette. Had to let it out. It's amazing, that once in a great while, when I'm driving down the road, I can sometimes smell the cigar from the car in front of me. Happened years ago, a year or 2 after I quit, and I thought I was just imagining it. But, caught up to the car ahead, and I seen the cigar the guy was smoking. I have no desire to ever light up a cigarette, but, when I smell, what I consider, a good cigar, it makes me want one. But, cigarette smoke turns me off. Go figure. gypsyman

With out taking sides either way, the question I have is why someone that wants to open a business that allows smoking and caters to the smoker is forced to obey a law that says they can't do it.
If the owner were to place a sign on the door stating that this business allows smoking then I don't see where anyone has the right to complain.
If you don't like smoke then don't go in.
No one is forcing you to, but if you do go in, then that was your choice and you knew it in advance.
As far as the employees, they must be told at the time they are hired that they will be working in a smoking endowment.
If they don't want to do that then don't apply for the job.
Those that don't like the smoke can and will go someplace else.
Those that want to smoke or don't mind it is free to enter or go someplace else also.
Again, no one is forcing them to enter or to work there.
Like I said, I am not taking sides, just think that the person should be able to decide for them self.

One last thing about that second hand smoke.
We all know that it is bad for you but they make like it is worse than first hand smoke.
If it is so bad then why doesn't the government just ban all forms of smoking?
They banned it from businesses with no problem.
Maybe they just don't want to loose all that tax money from the sale of tobacco.
I wish they would ban tobacco and while they are at it ban beer wine and liquor also.
