Std. XTP's are designed for speeds up to 1400 or so FPS.  I think you're going to get explosive or frangible performance.  I tried pushing some 250's a little fast in my Blackhawk with near max loads of H110 and some were actually desintegrating before contacting the target board and I wasn't nearly as fast as yours.  Unfortunately, I don't see any XTP magnums, but that was my solution in .45 Colt was to go to the 240gr XTP Magnums and 300gr XTP Magnums.  8(

Just FYI- According to Hornady the 140 is rated for 700 to 1600fps

If this information is correct, why, in Hornady's 8th edition, do they list rifle loads for this bullet over H100 and 296 in excess of 1900 fps? ???

I have the same dilema with 100 gr. .32-20 XTPs running 2200 plus fps.  Also listed in Hornady's 8th.

just a guess,
the 700 to 1600 is terminal velocity.
1900 at the muzzle would mean over expansion on close shots.

I'd say it's a good guess, but folks are talking about XTPs shedding their jackets before reaching the target.  I've heard this complaint several times before and have found jacket fragments in a single milk jug shot at 50 yards.

WELCOME,
I am glad and completely understand the confidence you get from finding an accurate loading from a favorite firearm. But I must tell you, this bullet, fired at this velocity will not provide consistent, acceptable penetration because of over expansion, for use as a big game bullet. Yes I have used it, but in a revolver, at about 400 less FPS.
Head back to the loading room with another excellent bullet.. a 158 XTP FP bullet. Push it as fast as you want from this caliber or simply to acceptable accuracy. You will be rewarded with a bullet that performs as a rifle bullet fired form a caliber like a 308/3006. Excellent penetration and expansion and reliable thru and thru penetration.

Not an xtp, but my granddaughter shot a deer with my >357 (before I reamed it to maxi), using a Remington 158 gr. jhp, and it fragmented badly. I'd with a flat point rathen than hollow point.

Oh, I see that CW already mentioned that.

Good advice.

Loadings such as this or even faster CAN produce instantaneous "Hammer of Thor" type stops. BUT they also produced many hideous wounds if your accuracy is off. The margin for error using them is not worth using. Its certainly not a humane hunters optimum choice..

Afternoon,
Yes some of there loadings use short brass for caliber. They have other ammo that is loaded quite hot. Its known to cause issue with a number of firearms. there is a governing body called SAMMI. These are the sizes, pressures and constraints on each and every caliber we have today. Hornady chose to ignore these specifications.
In many cases I too prefer the heaviest weights for each caliber. In smaller than 35 calibers, this is not always projectile.
I have shot a number of deer with these smaller 35's. In Revolvers, Contenders and Carbines. By far THE top preforming bullet was the 158Gr XTP FP from the Contender and Carbine. It mushrooms as a big game bullet should. Breaks bones and holds together. I tried it in the Maximum and found its a bit fragile at its attainable velocities.
I also shot a couple deer with factory 158 Rem HP slugs. I found them also soft in the rifle and contender. I shot a number of Wood chucks with then in the Contender with some explosive results. Head/upper body shots removed the head.
I shot one deer with a 125Gr Federal HP and it dropped in its tracks. I was elated, but while butchering I found the base of the bullet and a bunch of blood shot meat. The bullet must have vaporized inside the chest cavity. I tried the 125 Sierra SP bullets. These where found to be about the same. I was done with these light weights for deer. I tried the 140 Speer HP and what a bullet it was from my 8" Revolver. Nice expansion and thru and thru penetration.

Pete

I'd never seen it either Pete, then I shot one and had good hold and sight picture, good breath and it hit the dirt short of the target.  Did it again and part went down and part flew and hit the paper.  When I got down to the target, it was peppered and I found several small pieces of jacket.  I was a bit disturbed and had another box of the bullets, so I thought maybe a bad box.  Went home, pulled all the bullets and segregated the "bad ones" and went back and tried again.  Both boxes did the same thing.  One box purchased at Midway online and one locally at Jay's in Clare.  Needless to say, I don't push em that hard now.  Not saying all will do this, or might have something to do with my revolver's forcing cone tightness, but it definitely happened.  Guy that built the range I shoot at was there and couldn't figure anything else was happening too.  Dunno...

Hey Tacklebury, did you ever notice your auto isn't chambering it's rounds? The bullet stays right where it is as it comes out of the magazine.

I've definately had bullets had bullets come apart before they hit the target.

wow good to hear about these problems with the 140 xtp. I will try to work up some loads for deer with the 158gr bullet.  guess these 140xtps will work ok for varmits they shoot nice ,pressure is good using 17.5gr 2400, primmers aren,t flattened and rounds do not stick in chamber. accuracy was good 2 to 3 inches at 100 yards .
I shot one thru the chrony at a cedar pole 8in in dia into a sand bank and dug out the bullet at 2100 ft/sec the bullet is hardly deformed at all.
I will try shooting at some phone books and pails of water to see what happens
Thanks
