I was talking with several shooting friends and the question came up how fast have you ever reloaded to, so I decided to crank up the old 17-250 W/20gr Bergers and see what I could ring out of it well I got a one bullet that hit 5187 fps why one I don't know as most were at 5012 to 5033.
 
Accuracy had a lot to be desired but when i'm shooting thru the chrony all I care about is not shooting it and getting over the eyes.
 
Just thought I would post this being retired I think I might have to much time on my hands.
 
Anybody else push there's for FPS.

 Nope, I'd rather work towards accuracy myself. Had some fun with a buddies 223WSSM, was trying for 4000 with some 55grn NBT's but settled for a lousy 3860, ;) . We could probably get the 4K with lighter bullets but it can get a might breezy come winter time coyote hunting,,
 Darn thing has a 4" point blank hold to 390yrds

My guess is you were actually reading the gas velocity rather than the bullet velocity.

My guess is the bullets were probably turned about to gas too. I just dont see a purpose for doing this. Ive yet to find a varmit that didnt die a quick death using the 22250 with 55s

 I once loaded some 110 Speer short jacket bullets in my 30-06. I shot them at the range and got some incredible velocities. I also got BIG holes in the target as the bullets exploded from rotational forces! Way back when I was young, the speed bug bit me, but I was/AM too cheap to keep shooting up bullets and powder with zero results. I worked my way up from 22's to the 45-70, NOW i'm back to the .204 and 17HMR!

I guess some of you find this dumb, I don't I enjoy life and love to hunt and shoot heck I have even tried to put design's on thin metal plates
 
No gas reading at 15 feet in front, this gun's normal accuracy load with benchmark powder is 4200fps I have exploaded cheap bullets before with my swift and the 17 all it leaves is a blue vapor trail, I have hit many a P-dog on non windy days with the 17 it's something to see what is left or should I say not left.
 
There is a group of 4 of us that shoot together (all retired) and the 5000 fps = a free lunch.
 
This gun is also very accurate here is one of the groups I shot on monday.

Thats a dang fine group you got there. 

Personally, not sure how fast I have driven a bullet but in the day I did work on some loads in my Swift using 40 grain bullets.  About 1 out of 3 bullets would reach 100 yard targets...the other two turning into a blue grey mist well short of the target.

I did manage to have a few bullets hold together long enough to reach some starlings and ground squirrels.  Impressive to say the least.

In my book the Swift and 22-250 are in a class of there own when it comes to exploading vermin :)

 I read a story where a guy working for NASA necked a .378 Weatherby to 22 and recorded velocities around 8 thousand feet per second (8000 fps). It is supposed to be true. I wonder HOW he measured the velocity and WHY the projectile did not blow up.

Yep, gotta say the "red mist" is pretty impressive.  Ive had similar experience shooting 100 grain bullets out of my .264 mag.  when the jackrabbit populations are up.

Jhalcot...not sure I am buying 8000 feet.  Just seems way unreachable.  I would guess if the fella did get those kine of velocities he was probably using some type of exotic one of a kind bullet.  Ive got a .22/284 w/30 inch bbl and there are not many bullet manufacturers that will recommend one of their bullets and that are confident that it will hold together.  Barnes was confident withe their x bullets.

Probably would have to use lathe turned solids for that 8000 fps. Don't think case would handle it though.

Silvertp 22-284 and 30" i'm sure you could push that one into 5000 easy my 17-250 is on a 40X action with 27.5" barrel  that is long and heavy I bought it that way if I would have had it done a heavy varmint 24" would have been just right for me.
 
I'm sure with some type of custom made metal bullets you could achive 8000 fps.
 
I'll tell you what we use to hunt jacks with md-94 in 30-30 using 100gr speer plinker they looked like rags after being hit, have not done that in years now I use my mini 14 and a 40rd mag even if you don't hit them it fun chasing them with a trail of lead.
 
If you ever want to see a explosion of a animal shoot a crow with the swift using 40gr Nosler BT at 4000fps feathers 10' in the air. ;D  about all you find is beak and legs and something that looks like a feather duster.

  All I know is the story said the guy worked for the space program. It is likely there was NO rifling in the "gun". They were looking for results from hitting the atmosphere at extreme velocity. I've heard that Jet Propulsion labs have hit 11,000 fps with a 2" cube using a magnetic impulse gun. Saw THAT on Discovery channel.

The guy at NASA may have used a smooth bore and sabot.
The M1 Abrams tank fires a sabot at 7,200 ft per sec. We know what that does on other armor. Its not an explosive round just kinetic energy from the weight of the round and velocity.
