dry firing a g2 contender
« on: October 06, 2011, 06:20:18 AM »
I just purchased a new g2 contender. The instructions warn against dry firing unless using snap caps. I have seen it written that if the hammer selector switch is placed on the center (not on either center fire or rimfire) that the hammer will not hit the firing pin and it is safe to dry fire. If this is so why did not Thompson say so in the instructions as this would solve the problem. Has anyone followed this through to lay it to rest.

Doesn't the G2 have a set trigger like the standard Contender so that it doesn't have to be cocked to dry fire?

No it has same trigger as Encore except with a selector for rimfire /safe/centerfire. I was wondering if it was safe to dryfire too.

Not Safe!

It will damage the springs on the firing pins and if in the center position it will damage the frame with enough hits.

I thought about it last night and realized you don't want to be peening it against the frame.

How about the older Contenders? Is it ok to dry fire those?

You can dryfire old contenders without cocking hammer.
