what's your favorite slugs
« on: October 06, 2011, 02:33:48 PM »
I have ush sluggers in both 12 and 20. Was curious on what everyones favorite slugs were for wach size. Slugs are getting expensive, so any help in narrowin the field would be a blessing.

I shoot 12 g and love the Remington Buckhammers.  They shoot very well (<3" at 100 yrds) and are inexpensive as well.  I tried Hornady and others as well and all they did is cost me more $$ and were much more inaccuate.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Dittos. In our 20 gauge Trackers as well. The Federal Barnes Expanders in 3" are a real close second.

I've been range testing, and the slower slugs seemed to group better in my USH 20.  Lightfields were best and Buckhammers were pretty good.  Of the faster slugs, Winchester Partition gold seems to group best.  The grouping was decent, but not good enough for the slug to be any more useful than the slower slugs which grouped slightly better.  IMO a fast, flat shooting slug has to group really well to be reliable for longer shots.  Otherwise, what's the point?  I didn't get the greatest groups with SST or Remington Accutip.

I am an inexperienced shooter, though, and I find myself questioning whether my fliers are the result of the slug-barrel fit or my own shooting errors.  That is maddening, as the slugs are so expensive.

Right now, I think I am going to hunt with the Lightfields and order some Buckhammers to investigate further.  Buckhammers have similar ballistics at less than half the cost.  After hunting season, I'll probably retest Partition Gold as it shoots flatter than Lightfield or Buckhammer.

My Remington 870 Canti full rifled barrel likes Federal Barnes expander. Shoots nice round under 2" groups.

Another 870 with a screw in choke rifled tube and open sites shoots Buck hammers into a softball at 100 all day.

My 12 ga USH likes the Rem slugs, Buckhamers, Copper Solids, Ultra Core Lokts & Accu points into ONE HOLE at 100!!!

My 20Ga USH hates Remington slugs... But likes the Hornady SSTs... it shoots em into nice round groups!

Two of my smooth bore H&R 12's shoot reg ol' Sluggers into 2" 50 yard groups with open sites.

My 20 usg likes the federal power shok 7/8 ounce. Tried the sst  and fusion and they were no good. They are slow but past 100 yards hold more energy then the faster lighter slugs. Just need to figure out the drop past 100not that I will ever shoot that far. FYI the Buckhammers are being discontinued after this year.

I use Horandy SST'S and can do 6 inch groups at 200 yards.  Last year I killed a doe at 200 yards and double lung her.  She didn't even go 15 yards and when I looked at her the bullet went clean through her.  Pretty incredible

DDupleks steel slugs all the way. They work great in both smooth and rifled barrels.
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.
