Mini Range Report
« on: October 08, 2011, 04:29:01 PM »
Drove up to our hunting area to do some shooting and a little salmon/steelhead fishing today, 7mm-08 Lite, 35 Whelen Improved, 405 Win and 22" 45-70 Handi made the trip with us, my best friend has never shot a 45-70 and he didn't bring a rifle, so he had it all to himself, first rounds in the 45-70 were 405gr Rem factory which run just over 1200fps in the 22" barrel, he also shot the 325gr LE ammo(thanks Pete!! ;D) at 100yds and 200yds, dead on at 100yds it shot into about 2" with a WGRS peep sight and his old eye, two 224yd rounds went into 6" about 30" low, velocity averaged 1938fps.

Didn't get much shooting done with the 405Win, just one shot which was 2" high and an inch left at 100yds, the next shot knocked the forend stud off again!  :-\ It sheared the two 6-48 screws off that I had added after silver soldering it back on, guess the next step is to use bigger screws. ??? Did chrono the one round at 2438fps.

The Whelen Impr got sighted in with a full case of BL-C2 RL15 under a 250gr Hornady RN, velocity was right at 2575fps, 2½" high at 100yds put it dead on at 224yds. This will likely be my elk gun this year, thought about using the 7mm-08 because it's lighter, but after weighing both, the 7mm-08 weighs 6lbs-14oz and the Whelen only weighs 4oz more at 7lbs-2oz, so it gets the nod.

The 7mm-08 shot the same 140gr TTSX/Big Game load I last shot time, just under an inch group for two shots at 100yds from my portable table which isn't as stable as the bench at the range, it's sighted in ~2" high at 100yds and right on at 224yds, I'll hunt deer with this one.

Didn't catch any fish, although we didn't spend much time at it, on the way up the river, someone was already in the hole we always catch fish in, there was a drift boat in the other honey hole, so we went straight up to shoot. On the was back there was another boat in the upper hole, but the lower hole was empty of fisherman.....and fish too!  ::) Weather was great tho, 65º and partly sunny, light wind.  8)

Tim,
Could the .405 barrel be drilled and tapped with a larger screw acting together with a pillar to secure the forend? I don't seem to remember how thin that barrel is... :-\

Thanks, Dinny

Tim,

I kinda' held my breath and mig welded a stud back on my 357 max recently.  Fearing the worse, it came out great!  No distortion of the barrel and no change in accuracy.

The barrel wall isn't real thick there, dunno if a single larger screw would work, I have some 8-40 screws, so I'm going to remount it with silver solder and two 8-40s, then see if I can find a local welder to get his opinion. FWIW, I just calculated the recoil at 45.4lbs!

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,
That's enough to rattle fillings loose. I have little doubt that you will find a solution for this forend mounting, I bet it will come to you one evening while you're laying in bed trying to fall asleep.

Thanks, Dinny

That's some healthy recoil!  If all else fails, double side mounting tape will keep it there pretty well.  The foam kind made by 3M will bond extremely well to a clean surface.

I'll figure it out, since I have the whelen and the 7mm-08 all ready to go, no pressure!   8)

Thanks, and double thanks for Ben's Rocket City Redneck suggestion!  ;D

I mounted a modern fore end on a clip on shotgun barrel with the tape.  I had to lever a screwdriver under it to get it off!!!!   Sometimes redneck works.... :o

I've thought about it, done it before for the 6.5x55, but that barrel was a lot meatier than the 405, I'll have to do some precise measurein and thinkin.

I used duct tape at the range to hold it on when it detached the first time, it was shootable, but the accuracy with the old accurate load was unacceptable, the screws and solder worked fine for about 30 rounds, so maybe just adding the 10-40 screws and a couple welds will make it work.

A seven pound two ounce .405, mmm.  I'm thinking y'all just aren't all that recoil sensitive! :)

Dovetail, if the barrel has the meat for it will do the trick.  Doesn't have to be real deep either Tim.

I just inspected the barrel and specifically the remains of the screws and discovered they didn't shear, the engagement of the threads was too little and it ripped the screws out instead of shearing them. I measured the barrel, assuming the bore is in the center, the barrel wall at the thin end at the stud position is .202" in the groove. I don't know if I'd want to make a large cutout for a dovetail that close to the chamber, but feel comfortable doing a couple #10 blind holes, so that's what I'll do plus the silver solder, and I'll still check with local welders to see what they say, if they can tack it without ruining the finish above the forend, I'll have that done too. These loads are well over published data pressures for the 405, QL predicts the load to be 55kpsi CIP, so I'd hate to ruin the barrel.

BTW, it weighs 6lbs-14oz, same as the 7mm-08.  ;)

And one more note, I use a Leadsled DFT with no added weight for all my heavy kickers, takes the hurt out of bench shooting. It could also be possible the sled played a part in the forend detachment, I changed the position of the front rest to the middle of the forend instead of at the front of the frame the last time it shot well, the BC carbine forend is a little wider than the frame and the checkered synthetic forends and the grip it has on it along with the upward motion from muzzle jump may have contributed to the stud detaching. I'll be making some adjustments next time I shoot it.

Thanks,

Tim

Not to gloat, but I just caught my first Salmon ever.  lol  Took 3 trips to finally get one not foul hooked, but tasted good tonight.  8)  He was a little bloody as it took the guys about 3 minutes to find the stringer in the pack and only way I could hold him was to put my thumb and finger through the gills completely.

Tim, I'm glad the weather finally broke and you guys were able to get out and do some shooting.  Patty and I had great weather for our trip.

Tackleberry, ya can't B.S. me.  I saw that .45-70 lurking behind that fishing rod and  know what a 405 gr's concussion does to a fish ;D ;D ;D ::) ::)   Seriously, congrats and many more.

I think you're right Pete,  I think it has a black tongue and white gum line which are how we tell coho from chinook jacks which have all black mouths which is what they call em up north in the sound. Jack lost a coho on his last trip, they average 10-15lbs or so, with really big ones breaking 25lbs, the record is almost 27lbs.

Yes, we don't get them as big as you... 40# is a huge fish. The average female goes about 18-22# and males 15-18#. My best was a 38# male. That fish was an honest 18" from belly to hump!! It took me up and down the river over 30 minutes chasing him... He was fresh in the river and black as the ace of spades...
Unfortunately, I lost the pics of him years ago... it was long before digital or even computers for that matter..

Tim, the 'new' welders can get a spot bead on without having near the soaking heat of O/A or old stick welders, so the only bluing damage should be right at point of touch. Thats where it gets 'sticky', actually making the strike exactly where you want it. You might want to do a protecting, non-conductive wrap to keep from contact other than the area you really want.

Only if I can find a welder that knows he can do it, the fella I used to use is out of business, so I'd have to find one first. I may just use it like it is with the longer screws and new silver solder which will probably work just fine. I have a light duty fluxed-core wire welder, but it will only do 3/16" material and I know my welding skills are not up to the task, and I don't want to experiment on it and ruin the time and work I've got in this barrel if you know what I mean.  ;)

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

I'm sure you know that going deeper than the diameter of the screw/bolt isn't needed, diameter depth gives you all the strength you're gonna get.

You could make a new hanger.  Make one with a base that's wider than the stud OD itself.  You could go just as wide as the barrel flat and an inch long or so.  That should give the silver solder more square inches to bond with.  Between that and two #10 screws really should hold it.  Or so it seems to me! :)

Im thinkin' #10 is too big; #8s should really do (and if worse comes to worse you still have another upsize).
