Met a blowhard

Met a blowhard Saturday.  Patty and I were off wandering around Da U.P. this beautiful weekend and stopped at one of our favorite candy stores in Powers, MI.  We picked up a jug each of Varget and Lil Gun.  While we were there, a guy was looking at both a Handi and a CVA.  Some old lounger scrounger told him to buy the CVA.  The Handi barrels are junk made in China and his buddy had a Handi .243 that couldn't shoot for crap because it had a one in six and a half twist.  I came just a hair unglued.....Italian blood boiled a bit.  I told him flat out he didn't know anything about Handis or Handi quality, and to keep his mouth shut until he learned.  The store is owned by a really knowledgeable lady, "J".  If she and Patty weren't present things could have gotten ugly.  The nice thing is none of the other locals in the store backed him up at all.  The guy must have a reputation.

I met a guy like that one nite, Pete,  at a bullseye pistol match...
 
 He had the "ear" of a couple new shooters. Telling them that the HAD TO shoot a Pardini or a Hamerilli pistol if they wanted to be competitive. Just about then, he saw me across the room and drug the two guys over to meet me. Proclaiming "this is CW, he is a long time league member and a damn good shot. Ask him what he shoots"... Well, I shot a Walther OSP at the time and explained about it to them. When I learned what nonsense he told them I told them he was full of crap and I would prove it. If one of you gentlemen loan me your pistol, I will shoot my match tonight with it.... (Now remember, I don't know these guys and have no idea what they shot, but I had to prove a point here.) one guy produced a Ruger MKII, almost bone stock, but with a Aim Point red dot mounted. With its owner watching over me, I shot a lo 280's score with it.... I explained its the shooter that makes the gun shoot. A good gun will help, but ultimately the person shooting makes it happen.
That was 6-7 years ago... That loud mouth is still around, but he doesn't talk to me anymore...and I have to say, that's just FINE with me!!  LOL

It seems pretty much every gun shop or range has 'em, people just like to be heard. Some do it in a decent way and some just rub every one the wrong way..... Good thing Patty was there to keep an eye on you Pete. I can't shoot like CW, and don't have flashy high dollar guns to show off so I just kind of visit but when someone is like that you don't hardly get a word in sideways. And when you do talk they aren't listening anyway. Good job CW let the score do the talking. And Pete I don't know how you will win with a strager whos best friends cousins brothers nephew had one of these poor shooters and this guy just knows it was all the guns fault.  ::)   Maybe now he'll give them a second look in the future. But when ever I visit with someone like that you can't change their mind unless you were at the range and showed them. But they are out there. thejanitor

 Except for shooting from a bench, you gotta be way up in the skill levels before a shooter can tell much difference in the accuracy of similar guns.

I run the local range once a week and every so often some one comes up and
starts spouting that if you don't have a $1000 firearm you can't hit anything.
Well I'm 68 years old and a little unsteady but I set out to challenged him
( bench rest of course) against my .223 Handi. To make a long story short
he hasen't been back to the range at least not when I'm there. I'm not bragging
about myself but I am saying that Handi's can shoot.

I was at my favorite gunshop a while back and I was checking out the Handi's. A guy who was looking at some other guns came over and said "you don't want one of those". I said "why not"?
He said "Ever since Remington bought out H&R they've been importing the Handi rifles from Russia"
I said "You're thinking of Baikals not Handi's"... he said "nope... they're made in Russia now"
I picked one of the Handi's up and showed him the Ilion NY stamp on the frame...his response was "they're not made in NY... that's just the importer stamp" ::)
 
I didn't even bother to correct him. ;)

Spanky, that kind of ignorance "absolutely positively has to be destroyed overnight", otherwise the "authority" just keeps passing the same misinformation on to more innocents.  They in turn pass it on because they got it from the "authority", and he's always correct.  You're a jarhead....if they don't listen, ya bayonet them ::)

Most have heard BS in a gun shop. Some may have a thread of truth some no.
 
Something I have noticed , 30 carbines . If a man carried one in Eourp there were few complaints . Those in the islands had alot of complaints. Korea lots VN not as many with the M-2 . But today its junk to most go figure . Seems cutting down carries more weight than praise .

Your lucky you have a good Mom & Pop candy store to shop.  If you go to some of the big outdoor stores with the stuffed heads on the wall and large fish tanks you are likely to hear that type of gun BS from the guy in the green shirt, who works behind the gun counter. :o

Just a thought on the M1 carbine - if some mfg. came out today with a 'handgun' using a 110 gr JHP at 2000 fps and a 30-shot mag, the world would be in awe.

I once outshot a guy with a dressed out Kimber at the range.  He came over to see my high dollar gun....it was a 38 Rossi, stock equipped.  I like to see blowhards eat crow.
 
Way to tell 'em Pete.  Too many have been too silent about too much for too long, and now we've got a lot of the populace who have a head full of mush.

My dad, a WW2 Vet, also served in Korea (Canadian 2nd Battalion PPCLI). I've heard from him and other vets that Commonwealth troops were allowed certain types of fermented and distilled liquid refreshments, while US troops were allowed only Coca Cola. Canadian officers carried 9mm side arms, and US officers carried .45 Colts, M1 Carbines and Thompson sub-machine guns. It should not surprise anyone that a trade developed between the two allies and an occasional case of refreshment was swapped for things like M1 carbines and Tommy guns. Doncha just love good ol' fashioned free trade where both sides get something they want...?  ;)

I once took a self defense class . The instructor wanted all students to use his AR 15 for one test. About the 4th shooter it broke. I had a 30 carbine in the truck with enough ammo for the rest to take the test. The instructor and I didn't always see eye to eye but it was good natured. He like many had nothing but hate for the carbine , he clentched his teeth and class went on. So the next class he comes over and says he reserched the 30 carbine. With Win 110 JHP ammo it was on the heels of the 357 mag. He later got one. People need to realize the 30 carbine is a replacement for a pistol not a replacement for a rifle.

My pops was a Navy airdale, flew the H-46 doing vert-repping during two tours to VNam.  Later flew the H-53 as a test pilot for mine-sweeping R&D' along with a 3rd SEA tour during OP Endsweep.  My dad got to be a Commander, had a regular commisson despite being ROTC from the U. of Utah.
 
The First Sergeant at that college ROTC Dept was a WWII and Korean vet, having been at the Chosin Resevoir.  My pops couldn't remember all the WW2 campaigns !st Sgt fought, altho he Iwo Jima was one of them.
 
1st Sgt HATED the M1 Carb!  LOVED the Garand!!  ;D
 
Unbeknownst to many history buffs, the Garand could pierce armour AND CONCRETE!
 
The BAR's and Browning .30 cal machineguns weren't the only Marine weapons capable of shooting the black-tipped AP '06 ammo.  [/color]Get two or three Marines shooting at the same 2 or 3inch spot on a pillbox and eventually those 163grain black-tipped armour piercing bullets could get in there, bounce around and even kill the enemy!  (or maim the crap outta him).
 
Compare that mental image to the paratrooper M1 Carbine some of the 101st and 82nd airbourne troopers carried into Normandy!!  Of course I realize multiple environments were encountered between the South Pacific and Euro Theatres - but I've NEVER heard (one way of the other) how well the M1 Carbine performed at the Battle of the Buldge.   :o   Or if many had been traded for something bigger by that time.  ;)    :)
 
Too bad Army Ordinance didn't instead make the M1 Carb in .45ACP it was supposed to replace with some personel!!  A .45 M1 Carbine would be something!

I went into Riley's Gun Shop in Hooksett, NH a while back looking for 300 grain jacketed bullets for the 45 Colt Carbine. The blowhard working the counter that night asked why I wanted those bullets. I told him I was working up a deer load. He proceeded to chastise me for my choice of caliber. He said "I have to question the lethality of that round". I nicely tried to explain to him what the 45 Colt loaded from the Ruger-T/C section could do out of a 20" Handi rifle. He didn't want to hear any of it, his mind was already made up despite the facts.

I walked out without buying anything and I decided to never patronize that store again. There are plenty of other nice gun shops to spend my hard earned money in.

To touch quickly on the M1 Carbine , Had a long time friend of the family that served in a foward observation role in the european theatre during WW2 , issued weapon was the M1 carbine. When ever was possible he would choose to take a dead germans 8mm mauser over the carbine simply due to only needing one well placed shot on an enemy versus multiple scored hits with the 30 carbine load..That was his thoughts on it.
 I, like alot of you, have ran into those types. And some of the utter crap that falls out of their mouths just leaves me recalling Einstein's thoughts on human stupidity ( that guy might have been a genius hehe ).. Most its just annoying opinions that hopefully will be cleared up in time with whomever they said "this or that" to , other times it can be outright dangerous , example = Employee tells prospecting first time rifle buyer that you can interchange 300 Win mag and 300 Weatherby mag ammo in the Vanguard rifle chambered for 300 Weatherby.... And that is far from the worst that I have had to correct someone on.

If I want to know about a firearm that I'm not personaly familiar with I'll first read all the reviews I can find. Then I'll seek out people that have one or have fired one. However, I've heard bad things about good firearms and good things about bad firearms. Nothing beats getting your hands on one and finding out for yourself. At our local Bass Pro it never fails to amaze me that the guys selling guns don't have a clue about any of them.

Perhaps folks that have firearm knowledge don't want/need to work for minimum wages behind a counter.
 
BTW If I get a bozo/blowhard in an independent shop I'll drop a word to the boss. ;)

Maybe so but you think they'd at least know which end the bullet comes out. ;)

some time back i got a handi in 44mag. picked it up with a can of h110. went to the counter and i shake the powder the guy came unglued. he told me to never do that . that powder had n. glycerin  in it and would explode.
