What frame do I have?
« on: October 10, 2011, 04:46:18 PM »
I have an NF serial number receiver (1991 manufacture) in 45-70.  In the original paperwork it stated that I could have that barrel fitted with 44, 357, 223, 30-30, 22 hornet, shotguns, but not the high pressure larger calibers (30-06, 22-250, 308, etc).  Since this does not fit into the SB-1 or SB-2 frames available now, what frame do I have?

I have asked the question before, but can't remember the answer.

Remove the buttstock and look at the back of the receiver.  Solid is cast (SB1), skeletonized is steel (SB2).  I think limiting what barrels the factory will put on older SB2s has to do with liability and the uncertainty regarding the manufacture of the older SB2s.  FWIW, I have a 1988 45-70 on an SB-2 frame and I fitted a 30-06 barrel to it and no problems, but I ain't the factory and no one shot it beside me.  That '06 barrel is now on a post 2000 SB2.

As far as factory accessory barrels are concerned, they won't fit any SB2 frames made before 1999 with any rifle barrel. If it's an SB2 frame, you can fit used barrel tho.

So I could not even send it in for a 44 magnum barrel now?  While it was in the 90's I did have a 223 fitted.

Not according to their new requirements.

Rifle barrels may be added to firearms manufactured since 1999 and only to frames (SB-2) that originated as a rifle, if frame passes inspection.

Well, I have two newer frames I can use for such things.
